24 Hours

Music icon Tom Jones returns with his first album of new material to be released in the United States in over 15 years. "24 Hours" represents another milestone for Tom Jones; from interpreting a classic Bruce Springsteen track (The Hitter) to writing and working alongside the likes of Bono and The Edge (Sugar Daddy).

Utilizing modern day producing maestros, Future Cut (Lily Allen), Tom Jones' "24 Hours" showcases the best of what has made him a legend. From the pulsing first single, If He Should Ever Leave You, to the soaring I'm Alive; from the reflective title track to the emotional depths of The Hitter, Tom Jones delivers one of the most powerful albums of his career.

Having sold over 100 million albums throughout his career and still touring and performing over 200 days out of the year, Tom Jones brings his best to this latest recording and shows why he remains at the top of his craft after 40 years.

2008-11-30 -- 1/5:: Where is my Tom Jones
I was waiting for Tom's new CD for a long time, and what did I get? Thanks Amazon for having the play song function, that saved me time and money. There are 2 songs that I can still listen to, that's about it. Tom still has a great voice, and energy, but please sing some nice ballads that I could sing along and melt in my fantasies. I recommend buying this CD who love his voice only, because the song selection is very week.

2008-11-29 -- 5/5:: Awesome! Tom Jones at his best!
I have waited for this cd for quite some time and I'm not disappointed at all! Sir Tom Jones delivers the goods on all the songs here!If you are a fan pick this up!! To the person who bemoans this album as "Pop", Tom Jones has always been Popular and this album does not vary from that. Tom keeps a modern edge to his tunes here and is not merely a retro-act! Lets see a HUGE tour for this cd!!

2008-11-28 -- 5/5:: Better Than Ever
I have been a fan of Tom's from day one of his career. This album is fantastic. His voice is better than ever with an unbelievable range. The songs are pure Tom. The Hitter is a little morbid, but the beat and the way Tom sings it, you can over look that. I have heard Tom sing at the MGM three times and do hope songs from this album are in the show when I got next year. If you are a fan of Tom, buy this album.

2008-11-27 -- 2/5:: Tom Jones at his worst
Someone is saying that this CD is a must to have for his fans. Well, I will pass. I have all Tom Jones's CDs up until he switched to a new style, simply POP. The move was to bring and amaze the young crowd, and partially he did. He disappointed all the ladies, who saw him as a sex symbol, singing their favorite tunes, even being in their sixties. Drama and passion never dies with age.

Well... as a music lover, all his new songs do not excite me at all. In fact they sound like a bunch of noise.
On the contrary his older songs tell a story, about love and life and have great music. I never get tired listening to them. I am hoping that one day he will make all his older fans, especially ladies happy again. One of them is my Mom...

P.S. Two stars for the hope.

2008-11-27 -- 5/5:: Soulful, Fun, Awesome-- Tom Jones at His Best
I admit up front that I am a big fan of Sir Tom's... if he sings a song, I will give it a listen. With that in mind, I did my very best to listen to "24 Hours" and rate it on its own merits.

If you are a fan of Tom Jones, you should love this album. He doesn't "reinvent the wheel" here, he just does what he does best: belt out soulful, fun, awesome tunes. If you are NOT a fan of Tom Jones, you should still enjoy this album. If the stylings of Amy Winehouse or Duffy have done anything for you, pick up "24 Hours", because you will find a lot of that same brassy, ballsy UK soul.

What is truly remarkable to me is Jones' voice. While other "comeback" crooners like Tony Bennett, Johnny Cash, and most recently Neil Diamond ("Home Before Dark" is an excellent album, by the way) have lost a little of their voices' depth, Tom Jones sounds as strong as he ever has.

This is a great album from a great talent. Tom Jones fans rejoice... A-Tomic is back!

The success of "'More" led to the Lectric Lady album, released in 1977 and featuring the hits "Come Back" and the club classic "Love is You". This was sampled in 2000 by Italian DJ Spiller in a track called "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)" performed by Sophie Ellis-Bextor which reached number 1 in the UK & AUS Pop charts and sparked renewed demand for the original. Carol's success at salsoul put her in demand as a major disco act traveling the world performing at all the major disco clubs like Studio 54 and Odyssey 2001 and etc. she did a lot of TV specials like the legendary performance at roseland with the salsoul orchestra which was on television for a hole year in 1977 promoting an album completion called SALSOUL DISCO BOOGIE. Not long after the release of her album, Williams parted company with Salsoul in 1978 she signed with Canadian label Roy B. Quality Records she recorded a duet with singer producer Tony Valor "Love Has Come My Way" it got a lot of club play witch led to her 1979 album Reflections Of with disco classics "Tell The World" and "Dance the Night Away" with these classics Carol toured the world performing with other stars like The Tramps, Thelma Houston, the Village People, Tom Jones & James Brown just to name a few. In 1982 she had a R&B hit "Can't Get Away From Your Love" on Vanguard label which did well for her on the R&B dance charts "Your've Reached the Bottom Line" in 1983, "What's The Deal" in 1987 , and "Queen of Hearts" in 1989 all kept her on the charts. Her hits played an important part in the disco club scene. DJs typically kept Carol's records available as people would eventually request her songs. Carol Williams is still performing doing shows on disco flashback concerts and she travels with her live band you can find Carol Williams on Salsoul various compilations Unidisc, Suss'd Record's Vanguard. ...More

Lead me on to the light Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home When my way grows drear precious Lord linger near When my life is almost gone Hear my cry, hear my call Hold my hand lest I fall Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home When the darkness appears and the night draws near And the day is past and gone At the river I stand Guide my feet, hold my hand Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home Precious Lord, take my hand Lead me on, let me stand I'm tired, I'm weak, Lord I'm worn Through the storm, through the night Lead me on to the light Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home When you walk through a storm hold your head up high And don't be afraid of the dark. At the end of a storm is a golden sky And the sweet silver song of a lark. Walk on through the wind, Walk on through the rain, Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown. Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone, You'll never, ever walk alone. Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone, You'll never, ever walk alone. -------------------------- "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" is a gospel song written by Thomas A. Dorsey in 1932. The melody, although credited to Dorsey, was taken from a 1844 hymn entitled, "Maitland," by American composer, George N. Allen (1812-1877). The song has been recorded by many artists including Mahalia Jackson (for whom the song was written in mind), Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone and Elvis Presley and is included in many Catholic and protestant hymnals and songbooks, often known, simply as "Precious Lord". The most haunting recording is by Lonnie Donegan with the Chris Barber Jazz Band on Tempo label. Precious Lord Take My Hand Words & Music by Thomas A. Dorsey ------------------- "You'll Never Walk Alone" is a song written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II for their 1945 musical, Carousel. It was sung in the original show by Christine Johnson and later Jan Clayton with chorus. It is sung in the movie by Claramae Turner (although the weeping Shirley Jones first tries to sing it, but cannot), and later reprised by Ms. Jones and a chorus. In the musical, the song is sung after the death of the lead, Billy Bigelow, to give courage to Julie Jordan, pregnant at the time, and is reprised in the final scene to encourage a graduation class of which Louise (their daughter) is a member. As a result, it has become a standard, sung by graduation classes in the United States. The song is also sung at football clubs around the world, where it is performed by a massed chorus of supporters on matchday; this tradition began at Liverpool F.C. in the early sixties and later spread to several other clubs. The song was recorded by many artists, first charting in 1945 in a version by Frank Sinatra (#9 on the Billboard charts). The great tenor Mario Lanza conducted by Constantine Callinicos sang it in 1950. It was a #1 R&B hit for Roy Hamilton in 1954. Gerry & The Pacemakers sent it to #1 in the UK Singles Chart in 1963. Patti LaBelle and the BlueBelles had a #34 charting version in 1964. Elvis Presley's version got to #90 in 1968. "Bridge over Troubled Water" has been rerecorded by many artists, including: * Bobby Darin * Shirley Bassey * Roberta Flack * Tom Jones * Aaron Neville * Roy Orbison * Bon Jovi * Johnny Cash and Fiona Apple * Russell Watson * Blind Boys of Alabama * Elton John * Elvis Presley * Eva Cassidy * The Supremes * Robert Goulet * LeAnn Rimes * Bonnie Tyler * Michael W. Smith * Nana Mouskouri * Jackson 5 * Annie Lennox * Johnny Mathis * Whitney Houston and CeCe Winans * BeBe Winans and CeCe Winans * Charlotte Church * Tina Arena * Aretha Franklin * Peggy Lee * Anne Murray * Willie Nelson * Leona Lewis * Clay Aiken * Buck Owens * Barry Manilow * Jennifer Holliday and Luther Vandross * Linda Eder * Skeeter Davis

BERNARD "PRETTY" PURDIE... "THE KING OF BEATS" " A Living Legend " Aretha would not record unless Bernard Purdie was on the session!!!!!! He is The most recorded drummer in music history.... If you dont know.....

...More

just ask ARETHA! (the beat behind "ROCK STEADY") BERNARD PURDIE was born June 11, 1939 in Elkton, Maryland as the eleventh of fifteen children. Purdie began already as a six-year-old to bang out rhythms on improvised equipment. At 14 years of age he purchased his first real drum set and became the most important provider for the family - earning his pay with country and carnival bands. This "schooling" enabled Purdie to "feel my way into nearly every kind of music, 'cause I had to know all styles and was never afraid to try something new." Purdie moved to New York in 1960 after finishing high school and played with (among others), Lonnie Youngblood before landing his first hit with King Curtis. This led to his engagement with Aretha Franklin in 1970 - the beginning of an unparalleled career. Since then, Purdie has been a regular guest in the studios of the stars of Jazz, Soul, and Rock, working together with Paul Butterfield as well as Larry Coryell, Miles Davis, Hall & Oates, Al Kooper, Herbie Mann, Todd Rundgren and Cat Stevens, as well as regularly producing his own solo albums under his own name. Liner Notes from Purdie "Soul To Jazz." 3-96. With Brecker Brothers, ACT Music & Vision GMBH. Which musician did Aretha Franklin definitely NOT want missing from the line-up when she recorded her most inspired albums at the beginning of the seventies? Who provided the back-beat for Steely Dan's "Aja", and for whom have Isaac Hayes, Donny Hathaway, B.B. King, "Sweet" Lou Donaldson, Joe #@!&er and Hank Crawford reserved that stool behind the drum kit? The list is incomplete, it must be, because no other drummer in the last three decades has seen the interior of a recording studio as often as Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. The native of Elkton, Maryland has laid down the beat on over 3000 albums to date. This short list does however, prove an idea of the unique qualities this man possesses. Colleagues describe the drummer's style as the "funkiest soul beat" in the business, and Purdie has decidedly never limited his talents to the realm of jazz but rather has consistently sought out new musical experiences beyond it's borders. He has anchored sessions with the Rolling Stones, James Brown and Tom Jones with equal ease and proven that - with all his attention to precision playing - terms such as "drive" and "GROOVE" are definitely not missing from his vocabulary. This is certainly why his rhythms have appeared as samples on nearly every "Acid Jazz" record released in the past few years - the new genre that has so successfully hosted the renaissance of Soul Jazz. Furthermore because it is a special pleasure to personally harvest the fruits from trees one has planted oneself - Purdie has now gathered together a flock of like-minded souls and created the new album - "Soul To Jazz". It will certainly, so much can be sure, stun those who seek to copy his style - if not completely draw their attention. These 13 songs prove that the pioneer of the hybrid of blend of Jazz, Soul and Funky Tunes is still light years ahead of his imitators.
