24 Hours

Music icon Tom Jones returns with his first album of new material to be released in the United States in over 15 years. "24 Hours" represents another milestone for Tom Jones; from interpreting a classic Bruce Springsteen track (The Hitter) to writing and working alongside the likes of Bono and The Edge (Sugar Daddy).

Utilizing modern day producing maestros, Future Cut (Lily Allen), Tom Jones' "24 Hours" showcases the best of what has made him a legend. From the pulsing first single, If He Should Ever Leave You, to the soaring I'm Alive; from the reflective title track to the emotional depths of The Hitter, Tom Jones delivers one of the most powerful albums of his career.

Having sold over 100 million albums throughout his career and still touring and performing over 200 days out of the year, Tom Jones brings his best to this latest recording and shows why he remains at the top of his craft after 40 years.

2008-11-30 -- 1/5:: Where is my Tom Jones
I was waiting for Tom's new CD for a long time, and what did I get? Thanks Amazon for having the play song function, that saved me time and money. There are 2 songs that I can still listen to, that's about it. Tom still has a great voice, and energy, but please sing some nice ballads that I could sing along and melt in my fantasies. I recommend buying this CD who love his voice only, because the song selection is very week.

2008-11-29 -- 5/5:: Awesome! Tom Jones at his best!
I have waited for this cd for quite some time and I'm not disappointed at all! Sir Tom Jones delivers the goods on all the songs here!If you are a fan pick this up!! To the person who bemoans this album as "Pop", Tom Jones has always been Popular and this album does not vary from that. Tom keeps a modern edge to his tunes here and is not merely a retro-act! Lets see a HUGE tour for this cd!!

2008-11-28 -- 5/5:: Better Than Ever
I have been a fan of Tom's from day one of his career. This album is fantastic. His voice is better than ever with an unbelievable range. The songs are pure Tom. The Hitter is a little morbid, but the beat and the way Tom sings it, you can over look that. I have heard Tom sing at the MGM three times and do hope songs from this album are in the show when I got next year. If you are a fan of Tom, buy this album.

2008-11-27 -- 2/5:: Tom Jones at his worst
Someone is saying that this CD is a must to have for his fans. Well, I will pass. I have all Tom Jones's CDs up until he switched to a new style, simply POP. The move was to bring and amaze the young crowd, and partially he did. He disappointed all the ladies, who saw him as a sex symbol, singing their favorite tunes, even being in their sixties. Drama and passion never dies with age.

Well... as a music lover, all his new songs do not excite me at all. In fact they sound like a bunch of noise.
On the contrary his older songs tell a story, about love and life and have great music. I never get tired listening to them. I am hoping that one day he will make all his older fans, especially ladies happy again. One of them is my Mom...

P.S. Two stars for the hope.

2008-11-27 -- 5/5:: Soulful, Fun, Awesome-- Tom Jones at His Best
I admit up front that I am a big fan of Sir Tom's... if he sings a song, I will give it a listen. With that in mind, I did my very best to listen to "24 Hours" and rate it on its own merits.

If you are a fan of Tom Jones, you should love this album. He doesn't "reinvent the wheel" here, he just does what he does best: belt out soulful, fun, awesome tunes. If you are NOT a fan of Tom Jones, you should still enjoy this album. If the stylings of Amy Winehouse or Duffy have done anything for you, pick up "24 Hours", because you will find a lot of that same brassy, ballsy UK soul.

What is truly remarkable to me is Jones' voice. While other "comeback" crooners like Tony Bennett, Johnny Cash, and most recently Neil Diamond ("Home Before Dark" is an excellent album, by the way) have lost a little of their voices' depth, Tom Jones sounds as strong as he ever has.

This is a great album from a great talent. Tom Jones fans rejoice... A-Tomic is back!

Born in Ottawa, Ontario, in 1941 to parents of Lebanese Christian descent who owned a local restaurant, Paul Anka proved a child prodigy, beginning his show business life at the age of 12 as an impressionist. By the age of 14, he was stealing the family c

ar to drive to amateur singing contests in nearby Hull, Quebec, and writing his own songs. His first single, "I Confess," appeared on the Riviera subsidiary of Jules and Joe Bihari's RPM label. While on a trip to New York with a group of friends who sang as the Rover Boys, Anka gained an audition with ABC producer Don Costa, and sang his own composition, "Diana," an ode to a former babysitter. Costa liked what he heard, recorded the teenager, and watched as the single hit number one on both sides of the Atlantic later in 1957, eventually selling a reported ten million copies worldwide. Anka placed four songs in the Top 20 a year later, including "You Are My Destiny" and "Crazy Love," tempering the all-out rebellion of rock & roll with songs that questioned parental authority rather than promoting outright disobedience. He wrote one of Buddy Holly's last hits, "It Doesn't Matter Anymore," and moved into movies with Let's Rock and Girls Town. The latter film spawned his biggest American hit, "Lonely Boy," just the first in a string of 1959 chart successes including "Put Your Head on My Shoulder," "It's Time to Cry," and "Puppy Love" (written for old flame Annette Funicello, and later a hit for Donny Osmond as well). By 1961, when the teen idol craze began to cool off, Anka (a millionaire while still a minor) could boast of the over 125 compositions under his belt, his own record label (Spanka), and the recognition of being behind the second-best-selling single of all time (only "White Christmas" had sold more copies than "Diana"). Instead of resting on his laurels, Anka took on the adult market. First, he groomed a solo act and got bookings into that haven for sophisticates, the Copacabana. Anka next moved to RCA and, in yet another shrewd business move, bought the rights to his old masters and made a fortune on reissues alone. He diversified his career by appearing in several more movie roles (including the 1962 drama The Longest Day, for which he provided the title song). One of the first pop singers to do shows in Las Vegas, he also hosted television variety shows like Hullabaloo, The Midnight Special, and Spotlite, and moved on to foreign audiences in Asia and Europe (where he found his wife, Parisian model Anne de Zogheb). He wrote the theme to The Tonight Show (aired every weeknight for almost 30 years), rewrote the French lyrics to the song "Comme d'Habitude" for one of Frank Sinatra's most famous later songs, "My Way," and also wrote Tom Jones' biggest hit, "She's a Lady." Anka also branched out in the recording studio, recording theme albums such as Excitement on Park Avenue and Strictly Nashville. Although he had hit the Top 40 only once since 1963, Anka stormed the number one slot in 1974 with "(You're) Having My Baby," a duet recorded in Muscle Shoals, AL, with his singing protégée, Odia Coates. The duo's next two singles, "One Man Woman/One Woman Man" and "I Don't Like to Sleep Alone," both hit the Top Ten (his 1974 LP Anka reached gold), and his 1975 solo single "Times of Your Life" reached number seven. Anka charted into the early '80s, continuing his many casino and international appearances while recording sparingly but continually. As such, concert recordings and compilations constituted the bulk of his '80s and '90s discography, although he entered the studio also, most notably on the 2005 Verve date Rock Swings, a collection of contemporary standards. Its large success prompted a follow-up (of sorts), Classic Songs: My Way, from 2007, which included more contemporary standards as well as duets with Michael Bublé and Jon Bon Jovi. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
