Gilbert O'Sullivan (born Raymond Edward O'Sullivan, on 1 December 1946, in Waterford, Ireland) is a singer-songwriter, best known for his early-1970s hits "Alone Again (Naturally)", "Clair" and "Get Down". ...More
Biography
Early in his life, his family moved to Swindon, England, where he attended St. Joseph's Comprehensive school. Here he began to develop an interest in music and art. At Swindon Art College in 1963, he met Rick Davies who would later become a member of the progressive rock band Supertramp. During these years, O'Sullivan experimented with songwriting, writing his first song, "Ready Miss Steady."
O'Sullivan signed a five-year contract with CBS in 1967. However, after two unsuccessful singles with CBS, and one with the Irish label Major Minor, he sent some demo tapes to Gordon Mills, the manager of Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck, whereupon he signed with Mills' label, MAM Records. It was Mills who redesignated him Gilbert O'Sullivan, a pun on Gilbert and Sullivan, but the eye-catching visual image comprising pudding-basin haircut, cloth cap and short trousers, was O'Sullivan's own idea, reportedly hated by Mills but O'Sullivan insisted on going with it, at least for a couple of years, after which a more modern look took over in which he often wore a sweater bearing a large letter 'G'. At the end of 1970, O'Sullivan achieved his first UK Top 10 hit with "Nothing Rhymed", which reached No. 8 (No. 1 in The Netherlands), and enjoyed nearly five years of major success. This run incorporated thirteen more hit singles, six of which reached the UK Top 10, plus four Top 10 albums, including Himself (1971), Back To Front (1972), I'm A Writer Not A Fighter (1973) and A Stranger In My Own Back Yard (1974). In 1972 his international star raised, after his self-penned ballad, "Alone Again (Naturally)," a No. 3 hit in Britain, became a chart-topper in the U.S., spending six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and selling nearly two million copies there.
He also landed two consecutive UK chart toppers, with the songs "Clair" (1972); and "Get Down" (1973), which reached No. 2 and No. 7 respectively in America. However, things later turned sour, as O'Sullivan discovered his recording contract with MAM Records greatly favoured the label's owner. A litigation followed, with prolonged argument over how much money his songs had earned and how much of that money he had actually received. Widely reported in the media, this may have been the first high-profile case of its kind.[citation needed] Eventually the court found in O'Sullivan's favour, the judge describing him as "a patently honest and sincere man," who had been treated shabbily. He had won, but the court battle had put his recording career on hold.
Sometime before the case had come to court, he had returned after a five year chart absence in 1980, with a new contract with his old label, CBS. The first single of the new contract - "What's In A Kiss" - reached No. 19 in the UK. But then the hits completely dried up, and due in part to the court case, O'Sullivan released no new material between 1982 and 1987. Apart from a minor hit single in 1990 and a compilation album in 1991, O'Sullivan was absent from the charts until another compilation album returned him to the Top 20 in 2004. For years O'Sullivan spoke in a bad light about his fall from fame, once saying that "no-one cares" what he has to say anymore, until the internet came along and he got in contact with some fans on his website.
However, O'Sullivan continues to record and perform to the present day, and enjoys some success in Japan. |

Tom Jones - "It's Not Unusual"
It's not unusual to be loved by anyone
It's not unusual to have fun with anyone
but when I see you hanging about with anyone
It's not unusual to see me cry,
oh I wann ...More a' die
It's not unusual to go out at any time
but when I see you out and about it's such a crime
if you should ever want to be loved by anyone,
It's not unusual it happens every day no matter what you say
you find it happens all the time
love will never do what you want it to
why can't this crazy love be mine
It's not unusual, to be mad with anyone
It's not unusual, to be sad with anyone
but if I ever find that you've changed at anytime
it's not unusual to find out that I'm in love with you
whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh |

(Merle Tavis)
Huge 1955 hit by Tennessee Ernie Ford
HISTORY OF "SIXTEEN TONS"
(This article from Wikipedia)
"Sixteen Tons" is a song about the misery of coal mining. Although generally credited as being written in 1947 by U.S. country ...More singer Merle Travis, it has also been claimed that the Travis version was actually a rip-off of an earlier song called "Nine-to-ten tons", written by a singer called George S. Davis in the 1930s. A 1955 version recorded by 'Tennessee' Ernie Ford was on the b-side of his cover of the Moon Mullican standard, "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A BABY TO CRY". However, it was Ford's "SIXTEEN TONS" that reached number one in the Billboard charts, besting the performance of the competing version by Johnny Desmond. Another competing version by Frankie Laine was released only in the UK where it gave Ford's version some stiff competition on the charts. On October 17, it was released and, by October 28, it sold 400,000 copies. On November 10, a million copies had been sold. The record had sold two million copies by December 15.
The well-known chorus runs:
You load sixteen tons, and what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt.
Saint Peter, don't you call me, 'cause I can't go;
I owe my soul to the company store...
The line from the chorus "another day older and deeper in debt" was a phrase often used by Travis's father, a coal miner himself.
This and the line "I owe my soul to the company store" is a reference to the truck system and to debt bondage. Under this system workers were not paid cash; rather they were paid with unexchangeable credit vouchers for goods at the company store (usually referred to as scrip). This made it impossible for workers to store up cash savings. Workers also usually lived in company-owned dormitories or apartment buildings, the rent for which was automatically deducted from their pay.
In the U.S. the truck system and associated debt bondage persisted until the strikes of the newly-formed United Mine Workers and affiliated unions forced an end to such practices.
The song has been covered by a wide variety of musicians. In 1955 it was recorded by Tennessee Ernie Ford and hit Billboard's Country Music charts in November and held the #1 position for ten weeks, then crossed over and held the #1 position on the pop music charts for eight weeks. Other examples include a rock version released by Eels on their live album "Sixteen Tons (10 Songs)" (2005), a country version released by Johnny Cash on his live album "The Best of Johnny Cash in Concert" (1995), a version with a rock edge by Tom Jones that became a hit in 1967, a blues-rock version recorded in 1972 by CCS, a slow, jazzy version released by Stan Ridgway on the album Anatomy (1999), a #@!&bia version by nuclear polka band Brave Combo, and a traditional roots country version released by Corb Lund on the album Modern Pain (1995). A folk-punk version was also performed by This Bike is a Pipe Bomb. Swedish doom metal band Memento Mori recorded a version of this song as a hidden track on their 1993 debut album Rhymes of Lunacy. The song can be found if the listener allows the CD to remain playing several minutes after the final listed song ends. Serbian hard rock band Riblja Čorba recorded a cover version called "16 noći" (Trans. "16 nights"), which appeared on their 1999 album Nojeva barka.
The 1990 rendition of the song by Eric Burdon was used for the memorable opening to the comedy JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO. The song is also sung in the undersea horror movie LEVANIATHAN.
Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich's rendition of the song on January 8, 2007 received fairly widespread media play on a variety of television stations and on the popular website YouTube.
In Russia, Moscow's venue "Sixteen Tons" is named after the song by Merle Travis. "Sixteen Tons" track is a house song and can be heard before each concert held in the club.
In Russia this song has been famous since the Soviet times, but in the Platters' version. The song was so influential, that in the USSR several cover versions were made in Russian. In one of the Russian versions the words in the chorus were about US plans to attack the USSR with 16 ton bombs:
Sixteen tons, the heavy load Planes are flying to bomb the Soviet Union
The planes are flying to the East
To bomb a simple soviet village
In 2005, General Electric ran a series of ads for its new "clean coal" campaign. With clear disregard for the message of "Sixteen tons," they used it to sell coal and the coal industry. |

It's difficult to know where to begin when it comes to describing Dame Shirley's incredible career which has spanned over 50 years. Having just celebrated her 70th birthday The Living Tree single and album prove age is no barrier for creating incredible music.
The original Welsh Diva and one of Wales' greatest musical exports, she stands tall alongside fellow Welsh singers Charlotte Church, Katherine Jenkins, Tom Jones, Cerys Matthews, Dorothy Squires, Bryn Terfel and Bonnie Tyler to name but a few.
The Living Tree was written and produced by Catherine Feeney and Nikki Lamborn of band Never The Bride. DSB fell in love with it after a chance encounter in Monte Carlo, where she now lives.
During her career Shirley has also collaborated with Swiss band Yello on The Rhythm Divine. She sang with Chris Rea on his Ferrari inspired film, La Passione, and probably most famously with The Propellerheads whose international club hit History Repeating propelled her into the spotlight. It featured on the soundtrack to the movie There's Something About Mary starring Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz and was the music behind a Jaguar car ad.
Shirley is the only singer to have recorded more than one James Bond Theme. She recorded three! Applauded by John Barry, Sean Connery and David Arnold, her hit records Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever ranked as the two best Bond themes ever in a recent poll, where she comfortably beat fellow Bond singers such as Tina Turner, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Matt Monro, Gladys Knight, Sheryl Crow, Lulu and Sheena Easton to the top spots. Casino Royale star Daniel Craig recently suggested DSB should record the next theme - after hearing The Living Tree you can't help but see he's got a point!
In recent years Shirley's recording of Diamonds Are Forever was sampled by hip-hop star Kanye West.
DSB has performed duets with acts such as Neil Diamond, Andy Williams, Alain Delon, Michael Ball, Bryn Terfel, Charles Aznavour, Jack Jones, Robert Goulet and Eydie Gorme and shared a stage with Ray Charles and Liza Minnelli on a successful tour.
Dame Shirley was the star of the M&S Christmas TV ad with her sparkling version of Pink's Get The Party Started. The ad, filmed in a spy movie style, featured models Twiggy, Lizzy Jagger, Erin O'Connor, Laura Bailey and Noemie Lenoir as undercover agents on a secret mission to attend an exclusive performance by DSB at a glamorous Christmas party.
DSB premiered The Living Tree at the 2005 Royal Variety Performance, acknowledged as the best in recent years. She topped the bill in her birth town of Cardiff closing the Welsh-flavoured show in spectacular style. Another highlight of the event was Catherine Tate asking the Queen "Is one bovvered?"
In a recent episode of American Idol (the US equivalent to The X-Factor) contestants Jordin Sparks, Lakisha Jones and Melinda Doolittle all chose Shirley Bassey hits to impress judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. Chris Sligh said "Shirley Bassey rocks hard core" and presenter Ryan Seacrest proclaimed that it was Dame Shirley Bassey songs that ruled the night.
