~ Neon Forrest - Iggy Pop
Views: 4794 | | | | | There seems to be a never-ending migration back to the bands three seminal LPs, starting with the classic self-titled debut of 1969, The Stooges, with 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog (covered by everyone from Richard Hell and Joan Jett to Uncle Tupelo, and samp ...More led by Snoop Dogg), and No Fun (done by the Sex Pistols). The second album released the following year, Fun House, contained Down On the Street (done by Rage Against the Machine), 1970 (the Damned), and T.V. Eye, most recently heard on the original soundtrack of Jack Blacks School Of Rock (along with Sick Of You).
The Stooges final album, 1973s Raw Power, was the source for Search and Destroy (whose endless covers include Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Go-Gos, Dictators, Everclear, EMF, Cameron Crowes Almost Famous movie soundtrack, and Beavis & Butthead!), Gimme Danger (Monster Magnet and last years Dogtown And Z-Boys soundtrack), and Shake Appeal (a perennial VH1 and horror movie favorite), not to mention Guns N Roses cover of the title tune, Raw Power.
Iggys first two solo albums (both 1977 releases) are equally turned-to for their riches. The Idiot is the place to find Nightclubbing (chosen for the Trainspotting movie soundtrack and memorably re-done by Grace Jones), China Girl (nicely rediscovered last year by Pete Yorn), and Fun Time (check out the versions by R.E.M., Boy George, and Peter Murphy). Iggys most-covered song (and most-requested, on a commercial basis year after year) is the title tune from the next album, Lust For Life, and space does not permit even a partial list of the songs appearances, from Trainspotting and tv cameos in Ally McBeal, Gilmore Girls, and NBCs 75th Anniversary Special, to commercials ranging from Kelloggs cereal to Royal Caribbean Lines, to covers ranging from the Replacements, the Smithereens, and the Damned, to Bruce Willis (on the Rugrats Go Wild movie soundtrack) and Tom Jones. The LP also contained The Passenger, a widely compiled and covered tune (as by R.E.M., Siouxsie & the Banshees, Lunachicks and more).
After Iggys self-confessed drug and alcohol-fueled lost weekend of the 80s, which included seriously overlooked albums on Arista (New Values, Soldier, Party) and A&M (Blah-Blah-Blah with Real Wild Child, Instinct), he emerged in 1990 on Virgin with Brick By Brick. It spent 37 weeks on the Billboard chart, the longest of any Iggy Pop album, propelled by Candy (featuring singer Kate Pierson of the B-52s), the first and only top 30 single of his career to date. Years later, Candy would show up in the American Beauty soundtrack and compilations spanning from Australia and New Zealand to Greece and South America. Iggy has gone on to build an impressive album catalog at Virgin: American Caesar (1993, with its manic remake of Louie, Louie), Naughty Little Doggie (Mar. 1996), Nude & Rude: The Best Of Iggy Pop (Oct. 1996), Avenue B (1999, a change-up with some jazzy, soulful spoken word pieces and a cover of Shakin All Over that has appeared on many collections), and Beat em Up (2001, with the 13-minute closing stream of consciousness monologue, V.I.P.).
The 90s also found Iggy embarking on a sideline film career that had begun almost by accident in the 80s with roles in Sid And Nancy and Paul Newmans The Color Of Money. Iggy could be seen in the post-apocalyptic Hardware (1990), John Waters ill-fated Cry-Baby with Johnny Depp (also 1990), the comic-based Tank Girl (1993), Jim Jarmuschs surrealistic Western Dead Man (1995, again with Depp), the Spanish sci-fi Spaghetti Western Atolladero (also 1995), the sequel to the comic-based The Crow, City Of Angels (1996), Johnny Depps American Indian thriller The Brave (1997, with Marlon Brando), the Chris Elliott comedy Snow Day (2000), and Jarmuschs all-star Coffee & Cigarettes (2003). Over the same period, Iggy became a ubiquitous presence in a handful of tv assignments, ranging from Nickelodeons The Adventures Of Pete & Pete and Accidentally On Purpose, to Star Trek Deep Space 9 and HBOs Tales From the Crypt.
In the midst of all this action, as far back as the early 90s, observers were getting wind of guitarist Ron Asheton (when he was in the band Dark Carnival) setting clubs on fire with his versions of Stooges songs. This was nothing less than inspirational to Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth) and A&R man Jim Dunbar. In 1998, they were able to create a group known as Wylde Ratttz around the core of Ron and Thurston on guitars, Scott Asheton on drums, bassist Mike Watt, and singer Mark Arm (of Mudhoney). They recorded T.V. Eye for the original soundtrack of the controversial glam-rock film Velvet Goldmine. |

Song: Delilah
I saw the light on the night that I passed by her window
I saw the flickering shadows of love on her blind
She was my woman
As she deceived me I watched and went out of my mind
My, my, my, delilah
Why, why, why, delilah
I could see that girl was no good for me
But I was lost like a slave that no man could free
At break of day when that man drove away, I was waiting
I cross the street to her house and she opened the door
She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more
My, my, my delilah
Why, why, why delilah
So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me delilah I just couldnt take any more
[Insert trumpet solo here]
She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more
My, my, my, delilah
Why, why, why, delilah
So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me delilah I just couldnt take any more
Forgive me delilah I just couldnt take any more

Album: The Best of Tom Jones 1998
Song: She's A Lady
She's A LadyWell she's all you'd ever want,
She's the kind they'd like to flaunt and take to dinner.
Well she always knows her place.
She's got style, she's got grace, She's a winner.
She's a Lady. Whoa whoa whoa, She's a Lady.
Talkin' about that little lady, and the lady is mine.
Well she's never in the way
Something always nice to say, Oh what a blessing.
I can leave her on her own
Knowing she's okay alone, and there's no messing.
She's a lady. Whoa, whoa, whoa. She's a lady.
Talkin' about that little lady, and the lady is mine.
Well she never asks for very much and I don't refuse her.
Always treat her with respect, I never would abuse her.
What she's got is hard to find, and I don't want to lose her
Help me build a mansion from my little pile of clay. Hey, hey, hey.
Well she knows what I'm about,
She can take what I dish out, and that's not easy,
Well she knows me through and through,
She knows just what to do, and how to please me.
She's a lady. Whoa, whoa, whoa. She's a lady.
Talkin' about that little lady and the lady is mine.
Yeah yeah yeah She's a Lady
Listen to me baby, She's a Lady
Whoa whoa whoa, She's a Lady
And the Lady is mine
Yeah yeah yeah She's a Lady
Talkin about this little lady
Whoa whoa whoa whoa
Whoa and the lady is mine
Yeah yeah She's a Lady
And the Lady is mine.
She's A Lady

~ Tennessee Ernie Ford - Sixteen Tons
(Merle Tavis)
Huge 1955 hit by Tennessee Ernie Ford
HISTORY OF "SIXTEEN TONS"
(This article from Wikipedia)
"Sixteen Tons" is a song about the misery of coal mining. Although generally credited as being written in 1947 by U.S. country ...More singer Merle Travis, it has also been claimed that the Travis version was actually a rip-off of an earlier song called "Nine-to-ten tons", written by a singer called George S. Davis in the 1930s. A 1955 version recorded by 'Tennessee' Ernie Ford was on the b-side of his cover of the Moon Mullican standard, "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A BABY TO CRY". However, it was Ford's "SIXTEEN TONS" that reached number one in the Billboard charts, besting the performance of the competing version by Johnny Desmond. Another competing version by Frankie Laine was released only in the UK where it gave Ford's version some stiff competition on the charts. On October 17, it was released and, by October 28, it sold 400,000 copies. On November 10, a million copies had been sold. The record had sold two million copies by December 15.
The well-known chorus runs:
You load sixteen tons, and what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt.
Saint Peter, don't you call me, 'cause I can't go;
I owe my soul to the company store...
The line from the chorus "another day older and deeper in debt" was a phrase often used by Travis's father, a coal miner himself.
This and the line "I owe my soul to the company store" is a reference to the truck system and to debt bondage. Under this system workers were not paid cash; rather they were paid with unexchangeable credit vouchers for goods at the company store (usually referred to as scrip). This made it impossible for workers to store up cash savings. Workers also usually lived in company-owned dormitories or apartment buildings, the rent for which was automatically deducted from their pay.
In the U.S. the truck system and associated debt bondage persisted until the strikes of the newly-formed United Mine Workers and affiliated unions forced an end to such practices.
The song has been covered by a wide variety of musicians. In 1955 it was recorded by Tennessee Ernie Ford and hit Billboard's Country Music charts in November and held the #1 position for ten weeks, then crossed over and held the #1 position on the pop music charts for eight weeks. Other examples include a rock version released by Eels on their live album "Sixteen Tons (10 Songs)" (2005), a country version released by Johnny Cash on his live album "The Best of Johnny Cash in Concert" (1995), a version with a rock edge by Tom Jones that became a hit in 1967, a blues-rock version recorded in 1972 by CCS, a slow, jazzy version released by Stan Ridgway on the album Anatomy (1999), a #@!&bia version by nuclear polka band Brave Combo, and a traditional roots country version released by Corb Lund on the album Modern Pain (1995). A folk-punk version was also performed by This Bike is a Pipe Bomb. Swedish doom metal band Memento Mori recorded a version of this song as a hidden track on their 1993 debut album Rhymes of Lunacy. The song can be found if the listener allows the CD to remain playing several minutes after the final listed song ends. Serbian hard rock band Riblja Čorba recorded a cover version called "16 noći" (Trans. "16 nights"), which appeared on their 1999 album Nojeva barka.
The 1990 rendition of the song by Eric Burdon was used for the memorable opening to the comedy JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO. The song is also sung in the undersea horror movie LEVANIATHAN.
Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich's rendition of the song on January 8, 2007 received fairly widespread media play on a variety of television stations and on the popular website YouTube.
In Russia, Moscow's venue "Sixteen Tons" is named after the song by Merle Travis. "Sixteen Tons" track is a house song and can be heard before each concert held in the club.
In Russia this song has been famous since the Soviet times, but in the Platters' version. The song was so influential, that in the USSR several cover versions were made in Russian. In one of the Russian versions the words in the chorus were about US plans to attack the USSR with 16 ton bombs:
Sixteen tons, the heavy load Planes are flying to bomb the Soviet Union
The planes are flying to the East
To bomb a simple soviet village
In 2005, General Electric ran a series of ads for its new "clean coal" campaign. With clear disregard for the message of "Sixteen tons," they used it to sell coal and the coal industry. |

~ Terri Walker - Guess You Didn't Love Me
Views: 422 | | | | | Terris list of credits reads like that of a music business veteran. After high school she attended the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre arts where she soon learned that singing was her first love. A short time working as a backing singer lead to high-profi ...More le appearances with Shanks And Bigfoot, Young Disciples and Brand New Heavies. Performances on the club circuit with Paul Wellers inner circle of post-Style Council soul beatniks followed, but a clear understanding of who she was, and where her career was going, still eluded her
I was working with everybody, and Id had a lot of attention, and people knew I could sing, but nobody really knew what I was about, Terri says. I didnt even know. I just knew that I could sing and that was what I wanted to do. I loved Whitney Houston, I loved The Eagles, I loved MC Hammer there was such a wide range of people and influences in my head, I just knew I wanted to do something.
So without telling anybody, she left for LA, initially just for one week. I told nobody except my Mum. I told her that it was something I needed to do, and she said You go, girl!. Terri had the phone number of somebody she had worked with in the UK, who was based in LA, and she called him when she got there. Her contact introduced her to a few people in the business and things started to pick up. Hinda Hicks was over there at the same time working on her new album, so we hung out a bit. A week turned into a month, which Terri spent writing and recording with a number of people around the city. My voice changed while I was over there, and I started writing songs about the way I felt about things. I just thought, This is more me.
She returned to the UK with a handful of demos, which soon had record companies knocking at her door. She signed with Def Jam UK/Mercury, and the resulting 2003 debut album Untitled won her Four Mobo nominations and a shortlisting for a Mercury Prize. The follow-up album L.O.V.E. simply served to broaden her fanbase, at which point — in true Terri Walker style — she decided, once again, that she needed a change.
Terri says that I Am brings together the best of the first two albums, and a lot thats new — the fundamental difference being that this album is all Terri Walker.
I had to think for a while about what I wanted to do next, and it was then I decided that I had to make an album exactly the way I wanted it to be made. I wanted to be judged on my own writing and my own performance, so I set about contacting anyone I had enjoyed writing and playing with up until that point, and recorded the whole album pretty much as live. It was great fun.
Terri went back to LA to mix the album with Gerry Brown, whose list of musical credits reads like a Whos Who of rock and soul. Its amazing working with a guy like that who just drops names like Steely Dan, Earth Wind & Fire and Stevie Wonder into a conversation, she says. And Gerry and Dekkor, they just let me do my thing everybody just let me do what I felt was right for me, and the result is an album that I love.
Terri Walkers influences are wide and vast and are reflected everywhere, in her performances and in her writing. Her mothers record collection — a catholic mix ranging from Aretha Franklin to Steely Dan and from Millie Jackson to Manfred Krug — formed her earliest influences, and one particular recording, Move Closer by the late Phyllis Nelson, was the one Terri remembers that made her decide: This is what I want to do. Hearing Whitney Houston a little later removed any remaining doubts, and singing has dominated Terris life ever since.
Her mother moved to Germany when Terri was four years old but she came back to the UK to be educated at boarding school in Sussex. There her musical training was largely classical, but she broke free of any such constraints after Italia Conte. Since that time, she has worked with an eclectic group of musicians that includes Mos Def, Lisa Stansfield, Rafael Sadiq and Ben Watt. Lead vocals on a Jools Holland album track, Misfit, led to a Royal Albert Hall performance with Jools and his big band, in a line up that also included the likes of Sir Tom Jones and Ronnie Wood.
It reads like a lifetime in music, but for Terri Walker it has only just started.
With the release of I Am you will be seeing much more of Terri, as she intends to take these songs out of the studio and on to the live stage. I want to do as many performances as possible. I want people to see me live, and I want to sing live. Im really looking forward to it. Thats the next thing for me. |
