Most folks aren't aware that Maybelle Carter was a fairly competent bottleneck player, so if I told you we were influenced by the Carter Family, would you make the connection? Probably not.
So... Views: 1939 |  |  |  |  | "Custard Pie" is the first track on English rock band Led Zeppelin's sixth album, Physical Graffiti, released in 1975. The lyrics to the riff-heavy song pays homage to the blues songs of the Robert Johnson era; specifically "Drop Down Mama" by Sleepy John ...More Estes, "Shake 'Em On Down" by Bukka White, "I Want Some Of Your Pie" by Blind Boy Fuller and "Custard Pie Blues" by Brownie McGhee.
The song contains somewhat difficult-to-comprehend lyrics, but, like several other songs on the album, they are full of sexual innuendo. In this case, "Custard Pie" refers to a woman's sexual organs and the song is rife with references to oral sex: "Your custard pie, yeah, sweet and nice / When you cut it mama, save me a slice", as well as "chewin' a piece of your custard pie".
"Custard Pie" contains a wah-wah solo by guitarist Jimmy Page, which was played through an ARP synthesizer. It also features an electric clavinet played by John Paul Jones and a mouth harp by vocalist Robert Plant. Some observers have pointed out that it displays some similarities in sound to "Whole Lotta Love" from Led Zeppelin II, which was itself heavily influenced by the blues song "You Need Love" written by Willie Dixon.
Despite being rehearsed for Led Zeppelin's 1975 US Tour, this track was never completely played live at Led Zeppelin concerts. However, on 21 May 1977 in Houston, Texas, Robert and Jimmy did very briefly perform Custard Pie during the acoustic set. |

"Hats Off to (Roy) Harper" is a song played by English rock band Led Zeppelin. It is the last track on the album Led Zeppelin III, released in 1970. The track features Jimmy P ...More age playing slide guitar, and Robert Plant's vocals, processed through a tremolo. The song was listed on the album as "Arranged by Charles Obscure," which was a humorous pseudonym for Page.
The song is a medley of fragments of blues songs and lyrics, including "Shake 'Em on Down" by Bukka White and "Lone Wolf Blues" by Oscar Woods. Therefore, the song is both a tribute to contemporary folk singer Roy Harper and the influential American blues singers who recorded in the 1960s.
Roy Harper is a folk singer from England whom Jimmy Page met at the Bath Festival in 1970. He became close friends of the band, who invited him to perform as the opening act on some later Led Zeppelin concert tours. In 1971, Page played on Harper's album Storm#@!&, appearing in the credits under the pseudonym "S. Flavius Mercurius." Harper would go on to perform the lead vocals on Pink Floyd's "Have a Cigar", from 1975's Wish You Were Here. In 1985, Page recorded an album with Harper called Whatever Happened to Jugula?.
"Hats Off to (Roy) Harper" begins with a strange audio snippet from the sessions which is quickly introduced and then faded out again, featuring Plant's voice and Page's slide guitar in tandem.
An alternate studio outtake of the track in the same style and similar instrumentation is available on some Led Zeppelin bootleg recordings. Likely from the same recording session as the official release, it features lyrics from the songs "Feel So Bad," (recorded by Otis Rush and Elvis Presley), Robert Johnson's "Traveling Riverside Blues" & "32-20 Blues", Sleepy John Estes' "Diving Duck Blues", Bukka White's "Fixin' To Die", and Elvis' "That Alright Mama." These songs were frequently performed in medley by the band at Led Zeppelin concerts during "How Many More Times" and, later, "Whole Lotta Love." Thus, this outtake perhaps gives insight into the inspiration for the track, a desire to lay down an acoustic, studio take of a staple of their live performances. However, Led Zeppelin never performed "Hats Off to (Roy) Harper" live in concert.

It is one of the recordings sponsored ...More by "The Jazz Appreciation Society" and features Sleepy John in typical form and accompanied by Hammie Nixon on harmonica.
Born John Adam Estes, to a sharecropper family in Ripley Tennessee on the 25th. Jan. 1904, his life was complicated from the start. One of a family of ten, at the age of six he lost his right eye in a baseball accident. As his father was a guitarist, he grew up with similar interests and made himself cigar-box guitars to play from the early days.
He went totally blind in 1950, and had gained the sobriquet "sleepy" from a chronic blood pressure disorder which led to fits of narcolepsy, which caused him to drop off to sleep without warning, sometimes standing up!
He was "rediscovered" during the blues revival in 1962, after a long and varied career through the 1920's and 30's.
He died on the 5th. June 1977 |

It was recorded by t ...More he BBC on June 16, 1969 for Chris Grant's Tasty Pop Sundae show during the band's U.K. Tour of Summer 1969, being broadcast on June 22, 1969. The song eventually found its way onto the Led Zeppelin album BBC Sessions, released in 1997. This is the only known performance of the song by the band, as no other audio do#@!&ent has been unearthed of it being performed live at Led Zeppelin concerts.
The guitar riff played by Jimmy Page that drives this song is very similar to Bobby Parker's 1961 song "Watch Your Step," which charted in the US and the UK. It is also very similar to that played by Page on the later Led Zeppelin track "Moby Dick", released in October 1969 on the album Led Zeppelin II. |
