Check out these Pet Shop Boys Recordings:

Discography: The Complete Singles Collection

Where would the '80s have been without the Pet Shop Boys? Discography makes a compelling case for the notion of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe as pioneers, if not geniuses. Mixing the cold feel of Euro-techno beats with the Boys' quest for something warm between the sheets, "What Have I Done to Deserve This" and "Suburbia" sound almost soulful. Although they seemed to be suffering from a terminal case of boredom, they managed to alchemize their ennui into touching sentimentality in "Love Comes Quickly," "Rent," and, especially, the AIDS-oriented "Being Boring." Discography begins with the Pet Shop Boys' beginning, "West End Girls," traveling past "Domino Dancing" and including their covers "Always on My Mind," and the medley "Where the Streets Have No Name (I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You.)" --Steve Gdula

2008-05-10 -- 4/5:: Let's make lots of money!
Functioning exactly as its title promises, "Discography" covers the singles released by The Pet Shop Boys in the span from 1985's "West End Girls" to 1991's "Was It Worth It." While in England, they ran up a string of hits worthy of superstar status, in the US, their run of chart luck ended with 1988's "Domino Dancing" (from Introspective). Perhaps it was their very dry British sensibilities, maybe it was homo-phobia, but listening to this set from start to finish really does make you wonder why these great singles failed to find a home on American Radio.

Granted, the early singles are the epitome of what made new-wave radio in the 80's a blast to listen to, and "What Have I Done To Deserve This" is both a classic song AND resurrected the late Dusty Springfield's career, but you can hear Pet Shop Boys growing in sophistication from the snide ennui of "Opportunities" (from the debut, Please) to Behavior's look back of "Being Boring." They were bold enough to try all sorts of styles (from Trevor Horn's bombast on the great "Left to My Own Devices" to the heartbreak of "Being Boring") and were certainly not without their sense of humor. Despite constantly being labeled as dry or droll, making a medley out of Frankie Valli and U2 ("Where the Streets Have No Name/Can't Take My Eyes off of You") makes not only for a smashing dance record, but for a darn good musical in-joke.

Although "Discography" has since been updated to Pop Art: The Hits and includes songs from the PSB masterpiece Very on, this single disc retrospective is as essential to understanding 80's pop as would be The Best of New Order or Duran Duran's Greatest. The songs here all stand the tests of time.

2007-11-12 -- 4/5:: Good Collection (but some songs left out)
Good collection of the PSB's hits; would have been great if they had included gems like "Two Divided by Zero" and "Later Tonight." Still worth it, though. :)

2007-10-05 -- 5/5:: fine retrospective of The Pet Shop Boys and their music
The Pet Shop Boys show their talent on this very good, solid CD retrospective. It's full of their hits and great music.

"West End Girls" begins this track set; they sing of the young women in London's West End district who meet "East End Boys;" and the musical arrangement makes good use of the strings, drums and percussion. Great! "It's A Sin" makes a dramatic arrangement out of the strings, female backup chorus, special sound effects to simulate thunder, drums and percussion. The Pet Shop Boys do this number to express a man's guilt just because he was gay. The music and vocals compliment each other perfection and "It's A Sin" remains a strong number even today.

"What Have I Done To Deserve This?" was a big mainstream hit for The Pet Shop Boys; the drums, percussion, keyboard and guitars carry the melody very well. "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" explores the frustration a man feels when he could not please his former materialistic lover no matter how much he gave to them. Good harmonizing, too! "Domino Dancing" features a great dance music beat; and "Left To My Own Devices" was to be another major mainstream hit for The Pet Shop Boys. "Left To My Own Devices" sports an excellent dance music beat with just a twist of disco flavoring to make this shine! This number lets The Pet Shop Boys sing of a man who wants to do as he pleases. I predict that you'll enjoy "Left To My Own Devices" very much.

"Where The Streets Have No Name (I Can't Take My Eyes Off You)" begins with some pretty funky special effects; and when the musicians come in this number takes off like a rocket! Again we hear a type of dance music with a twist of disco flavoring to enhance the beauty of this number. In addition, "Was It Worth It?" features a great arrangement and The Pet Shop Boys deliver this number like the pros that they remain! Good backup vocals, too.

The liner notes include some great artwork and we get the song credits also.

The Pet Shop Boys gave us so much; and it's wonderful that they shared this music with us. Hopefully they'll continue to entertain people for many years to come.

2007-09-09 -- 5/5:: Love it!
This was my first Pet Shop Boys album and I'm so glad I got it. I tend towrd bands like Erasure, New Order and this fit right in. Highly recomended if you like the 80's euro-pop-new-wave thing.

2007-08-16 -- 5/5:: This is what a Greatest Hits CD should be like
I've always been a hugh Pet Shop Boys fan, and when I lived in Canada (Toronto) I was lucky enough to see the Behaviour Tour. Even though I already own all the songs on this Disc, I bought this CD again.

Yes this is the second copy I've bought - one at home, and now one in the Juke Box at work. Filling a bar's Juke Box can be difficult - only 100 slots to please everybody who could walk through the door. Greatest Hits CDs are popular in Jukes for that reason - you an Artist's songs that are most likely to be played using only one slot.

What makes this Greatest Hits better than most, is that there is FAR less filler - the inside Jacket tells you how far up the charts each song went - it's a true "SINGLES" collection - not just a 'teaser' that will keep you buying all of their CDs.

This CD has been in our Juke Box for about 3 weeks now, and it gets a LOT of play - far more than the vast majority of CDs we've placed in the Juke.

If you're a die-hard PSB fan, then you already have this CD, if you're not a die-hard fan but still looking at this review then you will enjoy playing this one in your car - it's perfect for listening straight through!

I'm a loser in love! ----------------------- Eighth Wonder's roots start in a band called Spice. In 1983, Jamie Kensit auditioned his sister Patsy Kensit, then aged 14, for the vacant job of lead singer in his new band Spice. She formed a line-up consisting of herself of vocals, Jamie Kensit and Geoff Beauchamp on guitar, Lawrence Lewis on bass, Jake Walters and a friend called Nigel on percussion. Their musical influences included Haircut 100 and Stimulin. Spice made their live debut in autumn 1983, and then spent the next year playing further gigs to gain some attention from record companies. In late 1984, Nigel left and Alex Godson, a keyboard player, joined the band. They renamed themselves Eighth Wonder and Patsy began to write songs for the band. Their first gig as Eighth Wonder was in November 1984 in Wimbledon and further gigs followed. It was at one of these that Steve Wooley, co-owner of Palace Films, and director Julian Temple offered Patsy the role of Crepe Suzette in Absolute Beginners. [edit] Success in Japan and Italy In April 1985 they were signed by CBS Records and began recording in London, working around Patsy's filming on Absolute Beginners. In October 1985, with the filming completed, Eighth Wonder's first single "Stay With Me" was released and achieved success in Japan and Italy reaching #1 (it charted only at #65 in the UK). Shortly after, Lawrence Lewis (The Bassist) and Jake Walters (The Drummer) left, leaving Eighth Wonder as a four-piece band, without a Bassist or a Drummer. They then started using Drum Machines, and making Bass Sounds on a Keyboard. In August 1986, they went to Los Angeles to record new tracks for their debut album. There, they worked with Mike Chapman, who was best known for his work with Blondie. They were also approached by many respected songwriters, including Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics (although the song was eventually not used) and Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, writers of many hit singles including Madonna's "Like a Virgin". In February 1987, one of the Chapman produced tracks "Will You Remember?" was released in the United Kingdom but only entered at number 83 in the UK singles chart, yet it reached the Top 10 in Italy. In Japan, the band achieved another number one with another Chapman produced track "When The Phone Stops Ringing", which was written by Holly Knight and Bernie Taupin; the song was also a Top 30 hit in Italy. "Will You Remember?" was successfully released as a follow-up single in Japan, and was, in turn, followed by a Japanese exclusive mini-album containing the singles and b-sides which was called Brilliant Dreams. [edit] Success in UK Whilst completing their first album, the band had another line-up change with Alex Godson being replaced by drummer Steve Grantley. They worked with sound engineer, mixer and producer Pete Hammond, with the exception of one track, "I'm Not Scared", which was co-produced and solely written by the Pet Shop Boys. "I'm Not Scared" was chosen as the next single for release in Europe. It was greeted with media and public enthusiasm, and "I'm Not Scared" became a Top 10 hit in almost every country in Europe, achieving number 1 in Italy, number 2 in Switzerland and Portugal, number 3 in Spain, 4 in Greece, 5 in Germany, 7 in the United Kingdom, 8 in France and 20 in Austria. May 1988 saw the release of another single "Cross My Heart" which proved to be almost as successful chart wise as "I'm Not Scared" (#6 in Switzerland, #10 in Italy, #13 in UK and France and #56 in the US, where it was their only American Top 75 hit single). Eighth Wonder's next album "Fearless" followed in July 1988, and by October it had achieved almost 500,000 sales internationally. However the follow-up single "Baby Baby" reached a disappointing number 65 in the UK Singles Chart. They had one more hit in Japan with "Use Me" in 1989 and shortly after this, the band parted ways and Patsy Kensit began to focus solely on her acting career.

They were fronted by lead singer Jean Patrick (born 6 April 1954, in Martinique) and Annette (born 1 November 1958), with Daniel Vangarde and Jean Kluger the main songwriters. They are best known for their two hit singles "D.I.S.C.O." and "Hands Up (Give

Me Your Heart)". They also performed "Hello Rio" a song produced and written by Bobby Orlando, also known as Bobby O. He is more famous for founding The Fast later to be known as Man 2 Man, Divine, The Flirts and The Pet Shop Boys. The band was originally founded by Patrick - as Black Underground. He was introduced to Kluger by Vangarde, who managed the band. Under the new name of Ottawan, they were active over a three year period from 1979 to 1981. They were signed to the French record label, Carrere. In the United Kingdom they had two Top Ten UK Singles Chart hits. "D.I.S.C.O.", the act's debut single, reached number two in September 1980; "Hands Up" peaked at number three nearly a year later. In France, their single "You're OK" (French title "T'es OK") is one of the top 50 best selling singles of all time. Patrick quit the band and organized a new duo, Pam 'n Pat, with whom he scored another European dance hit, "To Be Superman" in 1982. Later, he re-organized Ottawan and toured Europe with his new partner, Tamara. Soon after Patrick quit again with the group and started his solo project " Ottman Jones", Esther de Bijl continued Ottawan with the new singer Robert Walker. Until today they are still touring the globe. گروه فرانسوی اتاوان که از سال 79 تا 81 در فرانسه فعالیت می کرد. 79年から81年まで、フランスで活躍していたディスコグループ。

s a rock band from Scotland, which had its greatest worldwide popularity from the mid-1980s to the early-1990s. The band, from the south side of Glasgow, produced a handful of critically acclaimed albums in the early 1980s, and later went on to produce some politically inspired and critically praised work. Founding members Jim Kerr (vocals) and Charlie Burchill (guitar), along with drummer Mel Gaynor, are the core of the band, which currently features Mark Taylor on keyboards and Eddie Duffy on bass guitar. Charlie Burchill and Jim Kerr formed a punk band in 1977. They were heavily influenced by Lou Reed, and after one unsuccessful single as Johnny & the Self Abusers, they shuffled the line-up to include former Abusers Brian McGee on drums and Tony Donald on bass guitar, the latter of whom was quickly replaced by Derek Forbes. Simple Minds commercial first album, Life in a Day, took a cue from fellow Post-punk forebears Magazine, and was somewhat self-consciously derivative of the late-70s punk boom. While still categorisable as 'rock', Simple Minds' second release, Real to Real Cacophony, had a darker edge, and announced some of the New Wave experimentation that would become the band's trademark sound over the next two albums. The next album, Empires and Dance, was a far more radical departure, and signalled the influence of Kraftwerk, Neu! and similar European artists. Indeed, during this period Simple Minds promoted themselves as a European band, not a Scottish or UK band. Simple Minds' sixth studio album, New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84), released in 1982, was a significant turning point for the band. With a slick, sophisticated sound thanks to producer Peter Walsh, Simple Minds were soon categorised as part of the New Romantic outgrowth of New Wave (along with Duran Duran and others), and the record generated a handful of charting singles including "Promised You a Miracle" and "Glittering Prize", which both hit the UK Top 20 and Australian Top 10, continuing the band's early success in that region. In addition, jazz keyboardist Herbie Han#@!& performed a synth solo on the track "Hunter and the Hunted." Despite the band's new-found popularity in the UK and Europe, Simple Minds remained essentially unknown in the U.S. The movie The Breakfast Club changed all that. Released in early 1985, this Brat Pack drama from writer/director John Hughes was a box-office smash and made household names of many of its young stars, including Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy and Emilio Estevez. It also broke Simple Minds into the US market almost overnight, when the band achieved their only number-one U.S. pop hit with the film's opening track, "Don't You (Forget About Me)". Ironically, the song wasn't even written by the band, but by Keith Forsey, who offered the song to Billy Idol and Bryan Ferry before Simple Minds agreed to record it. The song soon became a chart-topper in many other countries around the world. Taking advantage of their new-found popularity, Simple Minds released their most unashamedly commercial album, Once Upon a Time, which was tailored specifically to appeal to the stadium-rock sensibilities of American audiences. Reviled by some long-time fans yet embraced by millions of new listeners and critically well-received, the record reached number one in the UK and number ten in the US, even though "Don't You (Forget About Me)" was not included. The band made it clear in interviews prior to the album's release that they would not include the song, believing that it would devalue the rest of the album, which they felt could stand on its own merits. Once Upon a Time would go on to generate four worldwide hit singles: "Alive & Kicking", "Sanctify Yourself", "Ghostdancing" and "All The Things She Said", the latter of which featured a cutting-edge music video directed by Zbigniew Rybczyński that used techniques later employed in music videos for Pet Shop Boys and Art of Noise. Because of Simple Minds powerful stage presence and lyrics that trafficked in Christian symbolism, the band was criticized by some in the music press as a lesser version of U2, despite the fact that both bands were now heading in different musical directions. Simple Minds have secured a string of successful hit singles, the best known being its number one worldwide hit single "Don't You (Forget About Me)", from the soundtrack of the John Hughes movie The Breakfast Club.

in the UK. Taken from the self-titled debut album, the first single, "Fascinated" by Company B received lots of radio airplay and quickly became a popular song in 1987. It reached #1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play Chart. Today, it is regarded as a dance classic.
