Discography: The Complete Singles Collection

Where would the '80s have been without the Pet Shop Boys? Discography makes a compelling case for the notion of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe as pioneers, if not geniuses. Mixing the cold feel of Euro-techno beats with the Boys' quest for something warm between the sheets, "What Have I Done to Deserve This" and "Suburbia" sound almost soulful. Although they seemed to be suffering from a terminal case of boredom, they managed to alchemize their ennui into touching sentimentality in "Love Comes Quickly," "Rent," and, especially, the AIDS-oriented "Being Boring." Discography begins with the Pet Shop Boys' beginning, "West End Girls," traveling past "Domino Dancing" and including their covers "Always on My Mind," and the medley "Where the Streets Have No Name (I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You.)" --Steve Gdula

2008-05-10 -- 4/5:: Let's make lots of money!
Functioning exactly as its title promises, "Discography" covers the singles released by The Pet Shop Boys in the span from 1985's "West End Girls" to 1991's "Was It Worth It." While in England, they ran up a string of hits worthy of superstar status, in the US, their run of chart luck ended with 1988's "Domino Dancing" (from Introspective). Perhaps it was their very dry British sensibilities, maybe it was homo-phobia, but listening to this set from start to finish really does make you wonder why these great singles failed to find a home on American Radio.

Granted, the early singles are the epitome of what made new-wave radio in the 80's a blast to listen to, and "What Have I Done To Deserve This" is both a classic song AND resurrected the late Dusty Springfield's career, but you can hear Pet Shop Boys growing in sophistication from the snide ennui of "Opportunities" (from the debut, Please) to Behavior's look back of "Being Boring." They were bold enough to try all sorts of styles (from Trevor Horn's bombast on the great "Left to My Own Devices" to the heartbreak of "Being Boring") and were certainly not without their sense of humor. Despite constantly being labeled as dry or droll, making a medley out of Frankie Valli and U2 ("Where the Streets Have No Name/Can't Take My Eyes off of You") makes not only for a smashing dance record, but for a darn good musical in-joke.

Although "Discography" has since been updated to Pop Art: The Hits and includes songs from the PSB masterpiece Very on, this single disc retrospective is as essential to understanding 80's pop as would be The Best of New Order or Duran Duran's Greatest. The songs here all stand the tests of time.

2007-11-12 -- 4/5:: Good Collection (but some songs left out)
Good collection of the PSB's hits; would have been great if they had included gems like "Two Divided by Zero" and "Later Tonight." Still worth it, though. :)

2007-10-05 -- 5/5:: fine retrospective of The Pet Shop Boys and their music
The Pet Shop Boys show their talent on this very good, solid CD retrospective. It's full of their hits and great music.

"West End Girls" begins this track set; they sing of the young women in London's West End district who meet "East End Boys;" and the musical arrangement makes good use of the strings, drums and percussion. Great! "It's A Sin" makes a dramatic arrangement out of the strings, female backup chorus, special sound effects to simulate thunder, drums and percussion. The Pet Shop Boys do this number to express a man's guilt just because he was gay. The music and vocals compliment each other perfection and "It's A Sin" remains a strong number even today.

"What Have I Done To Deserve This?" was a big mainstream hit for The Pet Shop Boys; the drums, percussion, keyboard and guitars carry the melody very well. "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" explores the frustration a man feels when he could not please his former materialistic lover no matter how much he gave to them. Good harmonizing, too! "Domino Dancing" features a great dance music beat; and "Left To My Own Devices" was to be another major mainstream hit for The Pet Shop Boys. "Left To My Own Devices" sports an excellent dance music beat with just a twist of disco flavoring to make this shine! This number lets The Pet Shop Boys sing of a man who wants to do as he pleases. I predict that you'll enjoy "Left To My Own Devices" very much.

"Where The Streets Have No Name (I Can't Take My Eyes Off You)" begins with some pretty funky special effects; and when the musicians come in this number takes off like a rocket! Again we hear a type of dance music with a twist of disco flavoring to enhance the beauty of this number. In addition, "Was It Worth It?" features a great arrangement and The Pet Shop Boys deliver this number like the pros that they remain! Good backup vocals, too.

The liner notes include some great artwork and we get the song credits also.

The Pet Shop Boys gave us so much; and it's wonderful that they shared this music with us. Hopefully they'll continue to entertain people for many years to come.

2007-09-09 -- 5/5:: Love it!
This was my first Pet Shop Boys album and I'm so glad I got it. I tend towrd bands like Erasure, New Order and this fit right in. Highly recomended if you like the 80's euro-pop-new-wave thing.

2007-08-16 -- 5/5:: This is what a Greatest Hits CD should be like
I've always been a hugh Pet Shop Boys fan, and when I lived in Canada (Toronto) I was lucky enough to see the Behaviour Tour. Even though I already own all the songs on this Disc, I bought this CD again.

Yes this is the second copy I've bought - one at home, and now one in the Juke Box at work. Filling a bar's Juke Box can be difficult - only 100 slots to please everybody who could walk through the door. Greatest Hits CDs are popular in Jukes for that reason - you an Artist's songs that are most likely to be played using only one slot.

What makes this Greatest Hits better than most, is that there is FAR less filler - the inside Jacket tells you how far up the charts each song went - it's a true "SINGLES" collection - not just a 'teaser' that will keep you buying all of their CDs.

This CD has been in our Juke Box for about 3 weeks now, and it gets a LOT of play - far more than the vast majority of CDs we've placed in the Juke.

If you're a die-hard PSB fan, then you already have this CD, if you're not a die-hard fan but still looking at this review then you will enjoy playing this one in your car - it's perfect for listening straight through!

gfield, it sounds 4 me more gorgeus in this one: the B-Side version from the first/prime Maxi-mix ) called as "Disco mix". Hope you'll have the same taste...and enjoy ;) Review.- "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" is a 1987 collaboration between two UK recording artists, Pet Shop Boys and *Dusty Springfield. *Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien OBE (16 April 1939 -- 2 March 1999), professionally known as Dusty Springfield, was an English pop singer. Of the female artists of the British Invasion, Springfield made the biggest impression on the U.S. market. From 1963 to 1970, she scored 18 singles in the Billboard Hot 100. She was voted the Top British Female Artist by readers of New Musical Express in 1964, 1965, and 1968. Springfield is an inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the UK Music Hall of Fame. A fan of American soul music, the All Music Guide has stated that the sultry intimacy and heartbreaking urgency of Springfield's voice transcended image and fashion. Her dashing, glamourous image was supported by a peroxided blonde beehive hairstyle, heavy use of eyeliner, and luscious evening gowns. Springfield began her solo career in 1963 with the Phil Spector-influenced pop/rock song "I Only Want To Be With You". Her following chart hits included "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" and "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me". She campaigned to bring little-known soul singers to a wider U.K. audience by devising and hosting the first British performances of top-selling Motown Records artists on The Sound of Motown, a special edition of the Ready Steady Go! TV series in 1965. "The Look of Love", written for Springfield by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, was featured in the scene of Ursula Andress seducing Peter Sellers in the film Casino Royale. The song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song. The sudden changes of world pop music towards the experimentation of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Summer of Love themes, and psychedelia left Springfield out of fashion. The LP Dusty in Memphis received the Grammy Hall of Fame award in 2001 and was listed among the 100 Greatest Albums of All Time by Rolling Stone and VH1, readers of New Musical Express, and viewers of Channel 4. The standout track of the album, "Son of a Preacher Man", was an international Top 10 chart hit in 1969. The song was revived in 1994 by Quentin Tarantino including it in the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, which sold over three million copies. When released as a single in late 1987, it peaked at number two in the UK charts and at the same position on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the fourth Top Ten hit for Pet Shop Boys as well as the biggest hit of Springfield's career in the U.S. The song's success helped revive Springfield's career and led to a resurgence of interest in her music. Pet Shop Boys and Dusty Springfield mimed a performance of the song for the 1987 BRIT Awards. Following the duet the Pet Shop Boys wrote and produced the singles "Nothing Has Been Proved" and "In Private" for Springfield, both included on her 1990 album Reputation. It was peaked at #2 in United Kingdom, United States (Billboard Hot 100 singles) and Sweden, #4 in Germany, #5 Switzerland, #9 in Norway, #11 in Austria, #22 in Australia, and TOPPED #1 in Ireland. Springfield kept recording until she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995 and died in 1999.

e singles with more remixes released at Music History. Hope you'll enjoy it! Review.- Pet Shop Boys are an English synthpop/pop music/electronic music duo, consisting of Neil Tennant (born as Neil Francis Tennant in July 10, 1954, North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England) who provides main vocals, keyboards and very occasionally guitar, and Chris Lowe (born as Christopher Sean Lowe in 4 October 1959, Blackpool, Lancashire, England) on keyboards and occasionally on vocals. The duo write the vast majority of their songs and have also written songs for other artists. Pet Shop Boys formed in London in August 1981 when vocalist Neil Tennant (a former editor at Marvel Comics who later gained some notoriety as a journalist for Smash Hits magazine) first met keyboardist Chris Lowe (a onetime architecture student) at an electronics shop. Discovering a shared passion for dance music and synthesizers, they immediately decided to start a band. Dubbing themselves the Pet Shop Boys in honor of friends who worked in such an establishment -- while also obliquely nodding to the sort of names prevalent among the New York City hip-hop culture of the early 1980s -- the duo's career first took flight in 1983, when Tennant met producer Bobby "O" Orlando while on a writing assignment. Orlando produced their first single, 1984's "West End Girls." The song was a minor hit in the U.S. but went nowhere in Britain, and its follow-up, "One More Chance," was also unsuccessful. Upon signing to EMI, the Pet Shop Boys issued 1985's biting "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money)." When it too failed to attract attention, the duo's future appeared grim, but they then released an evocative new Stephen Hague production of "West End Girls," which became an international chart-topper. Its massive success propelled the Pet Shop Boys' 1986 debut LP Please into the Top Ten, and when "Opportunities" was subsequently reissued, it too became a hit. Disco, a collection of dance remixes, was quickly rushed into stores, and in 1987 the duo resurfaced with the superb Actually, which launched three more Top Ten smashes -- "It's a Sin," a lovely cover of the perennial "Always on My Mind," and "What Have I Done to Deserve This?," a duet between Tennant and the great Dusty Springfield. A do#@!&entary film titled It Couldn't Happen Here was released the following year. Also in 1988, Pet Shop Boys issued their third studio LP, the eclectic Introspective. The single "Domino Dancing" was their final Top 40 hit in the U.S. Neil Tennant is openly gay, although he refused to confirm rumours about his sexuality in the 1980s until finally coming out shortly after the release of 1993's Very in Attitude, a UK gay lifestyle magazine. Lowe, meanwhile, has remained tight-lipped on the subject. The duo are sometimes incorrectly assumed to be a couple (in the 1990 biography Pet Shop Boys, Literally, Tennant recalls that even their ex-manager, Tom Watkins, was under this impression for a time). Pet Shop Boys are seen as significant figures in gay culture for such songs as "Can you forgive her?", "It's a sin" (for which gay director Derek Jarman produced the video), "New York City Boy" and their cover of Village People's "Go West". They have written a song about a young male fan spending a night with a rapper, based on Eminem, called "The night I fell in love" and a song about coming out, "Metamorphosis". Their 1990s single "Being boring" dealt with the gay experience and the devastation wrought by the AIDS crisis; the song (and its supporting video, filmed by Bruce Weber), remains one of their most popular. However, Neil Tennant has stated many times that his lyrics are not specifically gay. Many of their songs are written from an ambiguous view point that can be taken any way the listener perceives it, and this goes some way to explain why a large segment of their die-hard fans are heterosexual. Pet Shop Boys have performed and worked with many artists considered to be gay and bisexual icons such as Elton John, Liza Minnelli, Dusty Springfield, Bananarama, Boy George, Kylie Minogue and Madonna. Pet Shop Boys attempted to organise and perform in a planned 2001 tour of out gay musicians, entitled 'Wotapalava'. However, the plans were later put on hold and the idea seems to have been discarded. The Duo have sold more than 50 million records worldwide. The longevity of their career is generally attributed to their ability to create melodic and interesting pop/dance music. Since 1986, they have had thirty-nine Top 30 singles and twenty-two Top 10 hits in the UK, including four number ones: "West End Girls", "It's a Sin", "Always on My Mind" and "Heart".
