rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991-2003)

In an era when pop nihilism fulfilled its dark promise all too regularly, Pearl Jam not only survived, but thrived to become one of rock's greatest bands. This 33-track double-disc career retrospective documents the arc of a career that went from arena and radio triumphs in the early 90's (while Nirvana's promise imploded in the wake of hype, Pearl Jam's crowd-pleasing fame only burgeoned) to the uncompromising, core audience-focused tack that carried the band into the 21st century. Shrewdly compiled by the band into an "Up" disc that chronicles the band's driving, Stone Gossard-Mike McCready fueled hard rock dramatics (including such early career landmarks as "Jeremy," "Alive" and "Even Flow" alongside more aggressive fare like "Go" and "Spin the Black Circle") and a "Down" side that focuses more on Eddie Vedder's brooding, often dark ballads ("Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town," "Yellow Ledbetter," their unlikely hit cover of the oldie "Last Kiss"), it's a collection that underscores both the band's range and musical integrity. Though centered largely on the band's pre-Vitalogy studio era and containing no new material, longtime producer/collaborator Brendan O'Brien contributes remixes of "Once," "Alive" and "Black" that offer new insights on the familiar, while non-album tracks like "Man of the Hour" and "State of Love and Trust" considerably enhance the overall listening perspective here. --Jerry McCulley

Been listening to Pearl Jam for a while but had never bought any of their music and am pleasently suprised in that I thought I would like the older (relativly) stuff but I actually like the newer stuff a bit (not much) more. Overall a very good compilation.

What Pearl Jam did, maybe even unwittingly, was to weld the thick sludgey minor-chord sound (and general angst) of grunge to arena size rock choruses and guitar power. In doing so, they managed to quickly outshine their nearest peers (Nirvana) commercially and ultimately become the vanguard for rock through the 90's. Along with Red Hot Chili Peppers and maybe Soundgarden, they shaped the sound of a decade and thrived to see their success sustained creatively.

"Rearviewmirror" reflects (har har) that 12 years between Ten and Binaural in solid fashion, even if does lean heavily on the first three albums. It also offers a dozen later track to show that, even while the band's spotlight had faded somewhat, albums like No Code were better even while the band purposely was making music that antagonized fans expecting more of "Jeremy." Treats like "Do The Evolution" and "Man Of The Hour" sound just as powerful as any of the pre-Vs. material.

And for those who argue that Eddie Vedder is a big old sourpuss, they miss out on fun stuff like the tribute to old 45's "Spin The Black Circle" or the totally unironic cover of "Last Kiss" (that actually hit the top ten in 1999). Guitarist Stone Gossard rips some particularly innovative riffs through the proceedings here, and it's worth noting that Goassard (as well as the rest of the band) usually co-wrote the band's songs. On "Rearviewmirror," they are divided into two CD's, with an "Up" disc of rockers and the "Down" side of more pensive or acoustic material.

It is the second disc where more of the interesting material lies for me. I've always personally felt "Better man" to be the best song Pearl Jam ever wrote, and the closer, "Yellow Ledbetter" is a damn good blues number with Mike McCready hitting a terrific facsimile of Jimi Hendrix. There is plenty of meat spread between the two discs, and for the casual radio fan of Pearl Jam, this is a great sampler at a fine price.

What "Nirvana" was to some Pearl Jam was to me There is a lot of "mystery" in Ed Veds voice He doesnt wear it all on his sleeve like cobain did. I can appreciate that, as well as the lyrics.From Yellow Ledbetter to Once its an "Evenflow" from front to back on this CD.

2008-07-18 -- 5/5:: Greatest Hits
Somehow I slept through the grunge rock movement in the 90s and missed this. I vaguely remember hearing PJ back then wondering how people could listen to this and call it music. Years later, I was exposed to the alternative rock music genre and "got it."

If you missed the boat, this is a great way to get into PJ's music and get a sampling of their hits from different albums. Some of these hits are lovely acoustic songs or blistering electric songs you can really rock to. To improve things, you get some remastered hits and get a much better listening experience than you would ever get from the original recordings.

If I really could get what I wanted, I would want a remastered PJ "Ten" album, which I think is the best PJ album. Until then this may be the best I can get. But this collection of the faster Up Side hits and slower ballad Down Side gives me a nice way to learn about the PJ albums I missed.

This collection fits together well with Nirvana, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and Bush grunge hits.

Pearl Jam was a big disapointment to this listener. Do you think they could have sung a song where you could actually understood the words. What a waste of money when I bought this music.

Since the release of his 2004 debut, The College Dropout, the Chicago-bred rapper has been fortunate to have enough good music in the marketplace to remain relevant based on his talent. But to some, he is best known for his incidences, like Thursday's widely covered run-in with the paparazzi while at the Los Angeles International Airport en route to Hawaii or one of his numerous outbursts at award shows. Below are 10 of Kanye's Most Extreme Moments. The list includes moments of his extreme brilliance, uncontrollable utterances (good and bad) and even a horrible tragedy that is clearly the wackest thing that could happen to anyone. The latter is proof that he isn't always the perpetrator but sometimes a victim himself. 10) Jesus Literally Walks With Kanye Kanye made three videos for his heralded track "Jesus Walks." Version 3 is the most shocking. The video offers a literal interpretation of the song. It's hilarious watching Kanye walking down the street accompanied by Jesus, who is wearing a toga, sandals and the crown of thorns. I don't think anyone was expecting this or any other rapper would produce something this compelling. 9) Kanye Finally Wins After making a spectacle of himself at the American Music Awards when he lost the Best New Artist honor to country singer Gretchen Wilson, many wondered how Kanye would respond at the 2005 Grammys. Fortunately, his debut The College Dropout received two trophies that night, Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song. When Kanye took the stage to receive the Best Rap Album honor he said, "A lot of people were wondering what I was going to do if I didn't win anything ... I guess we'll never know." And we didn't want to know. 8) Bonnaroo Boos Kanye The thousands of fans who turned out for Kanye's early morning performance on June 15 at the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tennessee were livid that the show started 2 hours late. The crowd booed and threw bottles, and even dissed Kanye the following days during sets for Zach Rogue and Robert Randolph. Kanye posted a blog on his website, saying that the delay wasn't his fault. He blamed the festival for not being able to accommodate his set up requirements and a Pearl Jam show that exceeded its time by an hour. 7) Kanye Gets Justice Obviously determined to upstage any of his previous award show tantrums, Kanye West bum rushed the stage at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards in Copenhagen when he did not receive the Best Video award for his video "Touch The Sky." Kanye rudely interrupted Justice vs. Simian's acceptance speech for their video "We Are Your Friends." In Kanye's clip, he took on an Evil Knievel like persona, kissed Pamela Anderson and had a verbal showdown with Nia Long. Even though Kanye admitted that he had never seen the Justice vs. Simian video, he didn't need to. Not only did Kanye not win any of the five VMA awards for which he was nominated, he was also relegated to performing in a hotel suite, as opposed to the main stage. When he saw Justin Timberlake take the main stage, Kanye went ballistic, cursing the cable network and vowing to never return. , the headline act. This is Fallon's ultimate musical goal. Based on the rapid growth of his audience throughout North America and his new EP, Slightly Used, hitting the market in 2006, he could achieve it very soon. From his base in Chicago, Fallon is building a following throughout the Midwest, Ontario and across the continent. Audiences are opening up to his style: his own unique take on the tradition of singer/songwriter, but with an intangible quality that makes listener feel that, deep down, he knows what they are feeling. Fallon moves effortlessly from ballads to upbeat pop to full-out rock. The 26-year-old Canadian singer and songwriter has been, at various times, a performer, producer, promoter, and roadie. Fallon is something of a local legend around Belleville, Ontario, where he pulled up to an A%26W --former band Pickseed aboard a flatbed truck-and drew 300 people for an impromptu concert. It may be his knack for producing and promoting that keeps him so connected to what his fans expect. "The typical person at my show tends to be laid back, casual and looking for good live entertainment," Fallon says. "They just want to close their eyes, listen to the story, and be carried away." He's been there himself: Fallon learned at an early age that music could take him away from problems at home and school. He started with clarinet at age 12; and really developed a deep appreciation for music at age 14, when he got his first drum set. "I'd go into the garage four hours a night," he says, "and just put on a CD and headphones and play along." He credits those early sessions with Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, and Foo Fighters with honing his skills and helping him feel good about himself. (He also includes Led Zepplin, The Beatles, The Who, the Matthew Good Band, Our Lady Peace and the Tragically Hip among his influences.) As he finished high school and pursued a degree in radio broadcasting at Loyalist College, his songwriting style crystallized. Fallon considers himself a free-association writer. "The majority of my songs are written off cuff," he says. "I get an idea in my head and then put the pen to the paper and just start writing, because if I think about what I want to say, I overthink and censor myself." Many of his songs spring from experiences with his wife, Kim, who has a profound influence on his art-she's his Muse, you could say. Fallon credits her with keeping his creativity on track. "She's not afraid to tell me if something stinks or needs to be better or if it's perfect," he says. "I can sometimes come up with an idea that I've played before; she has a great memory and will step in very quickly to let me know that I'm re-using stuff that I've already done." Despite his extensive musical experience, Fallon understands the power of collaboration. His five-year co-writing relationship with guitarist Kyle Defreitas, whom he considers a "guitar genius," is a good example "After developing the original idea for a song-the lyrics and basic musical structure-Kyle and I work on the progression and harmonies and then build the song from there," says Fallon. "Two songs on the new EP, "Someday" and "Ignored," are examples of what we can do together." When the new EP, Slightly Used, is released on NYOC Records this year, it will be Fallon's fourth recording. He recorded a 3-song solo EP with Defreitas in March 2002 titled The Power of the Voice of One Vol. 1; followed that up with a full-length album with his former band, Pickseed; then re-teamed with Defreitas for The Power of the Voice of One Vol. 2. Scott Juba of the-trades.com said Vol. 2 "demonstrates his tremendous versatility as an artist and proves why he is beginning to earn radio airplay in select US and Canadian markets." Back to the stadium: the song is over, the crowd is roaring, and Adam Fallon lets the sound wash over him. Big dream? Sure. But this artist, who backs up the dream with talent, enthusiasm and a relentless drive to succeed, will soon be stepping onto a larger stage.

Alexander also released this song, "Where Have You Been All My Life" in 1961 written by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil- sometimes erringly credited to Gunter or Gunther who wrote a different song by the same name. This song, originally done by Arthur Alexander, has been redone by a number of artists- sometimes as "Where Have You Been" or "Till We Kissed"- including The Searchers and Chad Allen & the Expressions (that later evolved into the Guess Who).
