It's getting better all the time
I used to get mad at my school
The teachers who taught me weren't cool
You're holding me down, turning me round
Filling me up with your rules.
I've got to admit it's getting better
A little better all the time
I have to admit it's getting better
It's getting better since you've been mine.
Me used to be a angry young man
Me hiding me head in the sand
You gave me the word
I finally heard
I'm doing the best that I can.
I've got to admit it's getting better
I used to be cruel to my woman
I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved
Man I was mean but I'm changing my scene
And I'm doing the best that I can.
I admit it's getting better
A little better all the time
Yes I admit it's getting better
It's getting better since you've been mine. |

"Getting Better" is a song written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney based on an original idea by McCartn ...More ey. It was recorded by The Beatles for the 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The song's music suggests optimism yet the lyrics, strongly influenced by Lennon, alludes to more sinister themes. In this sense, it exaggerates the contrasting personas of the two most active songwriters in the group. In response to McCartney's line, "It's getting better all the time," Lennon replies, "It can't get no worse!" Lennon also claimed the lyric that begins, "I used to be cruel to my woman..."
According to Hunter Davies, the initial idea for the song's title came from a phrase often spoken by Jimmy Nicol, the group's stand-in drummer for the Australian leg of a 1964 tour.
Lennon on the roof
One of the recording sessions for "Getting Better" is famous for an incident involving Lennon. During the 21 March 1967 session in which producer George Martin added a piano solo, Lennon complained that he didn't feel well and couldn't focus. He had accidentally taken LSD when he meant to take an upper. Unaware of the mistake, Martin took him up to the roof of Abbey Road Studio for some fresh air, and returned to Studio Two where McCartney and Harrison were waiting. They knew why Lennon wasn't well, and upon hearing where Lennon was, rushed to the roof to retrieve him and prevent a possible accident.
Construction
The song, musically reminiscent of the hit single "Penny Lane", moves forward by way of regular chords, produced by Lennon's guitar and George Martin, who struck the strings of a pianette with a mallet. These heavily accented and repetitive lines cause the song to sound as if it is based on a drone. Lead guitarist George Harrison adds an Indian tambura part to the final verse, which further accentuates this impact.
The song was performed live for the first time by McCartney during his 2002and 2003 US and World Tours.
Recorded 9 March 1967
Lyrics:
It's getting better all the time
I used to get mad at my school
The teachers that taught me weren't cool
You're holding me down
Burning me round
filling me up with the rules
I've got to admit it's getting better
a little better all the time
I have to admit it's getting better
it's getting better since you've been mine
Me used to be angry young man
Me hiding me head in the sand
You gave m the word
I finally heard
I'm doing the best that I can
I've got to admit it's getting better
a little better all the time
I have to admit it's getting better
it's getting better since you've been mine
getting so much better all the time
It's getting better all the time
better, better, better
It's getting better all the time
better, better, better
I used to be cruel to my woman I beat her
and kept her apart from the things that she loved
Man, I was mean but I'm changing my scene
and I'm doing the best that I can
I've got to admit it's getting better

"No Reply" is a song by the Beatles from the UK album Beatles for Sale and the US album Beatles '65. It was wri ...More tten by John Lennon and credited to Lennon-McCartney.
The song is about a young man who is unable to contact his possibly unfaithful girlfriend, even though he sees her through her windows.
Originally John Lennon had intended to sing the higher harmony part of the chorus, as this was the original melody. However, his voice had deteriorated due to excessive use and Paul McCartney had to take this part, relegating Lennon to the lower harmony line.
According to Lennon in 1972, the Beatles' music publisher Dick James was quite pleased with "No Reply":
" I remember Dick James coming up to me after we did this one and saying, 'You're getting better now — that was a complete story.' Apparently, before that, he thought my songs wandered off. "
Reviewer David Rowley found its lyrics to "read like a picture story from a girl's comic," and to depict the picture "of walking down a street and seeing a girl silhouetted in a window, not answering the telephone".
This song has been covered by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and is slated to be on their next album.
Tonality and form
The song is in the key of C major. The song form is standard AABA (verse-verse-bridge-verse), without a chorus as such, but including the refrain "No Reply."
Recorded Abbey Road Studios
30 September 1964
Lyrics:
This happened once before
when I came to your door
No reply
They said it wasn't you
but I saw you peep through
your window
I saw the light
I saw the light
I know that you saw me
'cause I looked up to see
your face
I tried to telephone
They said you were not home
that's a lie
'cause I know where you've been
I saw you walk in
your door
I nearly died
I nearly died
'cause you walked hand in hand
with another man
in my place
If I were you
I'd realize that I
love you more
than any other guy
And I'll forgive
the lies that I
heard before
when you gave me no reply
I tried to telephone
They said you were not home
that's a lie
'cause I know where you've been
I saw you walk in
your door
I nearly died
I nearly died
'cause you walked hand in hand
with another man
in my place

~ Paul McCartney cries after John Lennon's death
Views: 372535 | | | | | Paul listens to the song "Beautiful Boy" and tries to hold back the tears.
Notice the tribute in the song to Paul ("every day, in every way, is getting better and better"). It's from The Beatles' song "Getting Better" - John's contribution to that song ...More at the time was cynical and witty (his lyric was "it can't get no worse") but here he was sending a little message to Paul that Paul was right, life does just get keep getting better and better. |
