Things We Said Today" is a song by the Beatles and credited to Lennon & McCartney. It was composed ...More for the film A Hard Day's Night and was the B-side of the "A Hard Day's Night" single in the UK.
The song is one of three main compositions (along with "And I Love Her" and "Can't Buy Me Love") that Paul McCartney wrote for the Beatles film. Recorded in advance of film production for lip-synching reasons, "Things We Said Today" has a reverse nostalgia premise. Paul McCartney: "I wrote this on acoustic. It was a slightly nostalgic thing already, a future nostalgia. We'll remember the things we said today, sometime in the future, so the song projects itself into the future".
McCartney was particularly satisfied with his chord change, F major to B flat major—instead of the more obvious F minor—which first occurs beneath "...wishing you weren't so far away" in the song. John Lennon accentuates McCartney's strident acoustic guitar strumming by triple hitting a low A note on a piano. The tempo of the song moves from ballad to rock and back with a minor to major key change during its middle eight section.
McCartney's diction, double tracked, is so accurate that in places it cancels itself out, sounding untracked (conversely, Lennon's vocals were always different, and often sounded quite messy when double tracked). This was still before ADT (automatic double tracking) had been invented at Lennon's behest, by Abbey Road studio's Ken Townsend.
Paul McCartney wrote the song while cruising the Caribbean aboard a yacht called Happy Days. It is based on his relationship with his then-girlfriend, Jane Asher. Because of their busy lives, they could not spend much time together.
The Beatles included "Things We Said Today" as part of their live set during their world tour.
The French singer Dick Rivers recorded the song as "Ces Mots Qu'On Oublie Un Jour".
In 1989/90, Paul McCartney included the song as part of his own world tour.

Lyrics:
You say you will love me
If I have to go
You'll be thinking of me
somehow I will know
Someday when I'm lonely
wishing you weren't so far away
Then I will remember
Things we said today
You said you'll be mine, girl
'til the end of time
These days such a kind girl
seems so hard to find
Someday when we're dreaming
deep in love, not a lot to say
Then we will remember
Things we said today
Me I'm just the lucky kind
Love to hear you say that love is love
And though we may be blind
Love is here to stay and that's enough
To make you mine, girl
be the only one
loves me all the time, girl
we'll go on and on
Some day when we're dreaming
deep in love not a lot to say
Then we will remember
Things we said today
Me I'm just the lucky kind
Love to hear you say that love is love
And though we may be blind
Love is here to stay and that's enough
To make you mine, girl
believe only one
loves me all the time, girl
we'll go on and on
Some day when we're dreaming
deep in love not a lot to say
Then we will remember
Things we said today |

"Wait" is a song recorded by The Beatles, from their 1965 album Rubber Soul. The songwriting credit is Lennon/McCar ...More tney, and is one of the real joint efforts between the two (Lennon wrote the verses and refrain in F# minor, and McCartney wrote the bridge in A major). The lyrics, describing the singer's anxieties about his relationship with his girl while he is away, are thematically similar to several other Lennon-McCartney songs, such as "When I Get Home" and "Things We Said Today," written during the period of 1964 and 1965.
The song was originally recorded for Help! in June 1965 but did not make the final pressing. When Rubber Soul fell one song short for a Christmas release, "Wait" was brought back. The Beatles added overdubs to the initial recording so it would blend in better with the other, more recent songs on Rubber Soul.
A cover version was issued as a single by Frankie Vaughan but failed to chart.
Recorded Abbey Road Studios
17 June, 12 October -
11 November 1965
Lyrics:
It's been a long time
Now I'm coming back home
I've been away now
Oh how I've been alone
Wait till I come back to your side
We'll forget the tears we've cried
But if your heart breaks
Don't wait, turn me away
And if your heart's strong
Hold on, I won't delay
Wait till I come back to your side
We'll forget the tears we've cried
I feel as though
You ought to know
That I've been good
As good as I can be
And if you do
I'll trust in you
And know that you
Will wait for me
It's been a long time
Now I'm coming back home
I've been away now
Oh how I've been alone
Wait till I come back to your side
We'll forget the tears we've cried
I feel as though
You ought to know
That I've been good
As good as I can be
And if you do
I'll trust in you
And know that you
Will wait for me
It's been a long time
Now I'm coming back home
I've been away now
Oh how I've been alone
Wait till I come back to your side
We'll forget the tears we've cried
It's been a long time
Now I'm coming back home
I've been away now
Oh, how I've been alone |

~ Shadowy Narcissus: THE BEATLES - Their 50 Greatest Songs
Views: 1160 | | | | | So many more are also great.
Hello. Re-reading the July 2001 issue of Uncut magazine I enjoyed going through a list of the 50 greatest songs by The Beatles, as chosen and commented upon by many critics, friends of the band, actors, movie directors and ...More musicians. There are many personal heroes on that panel: Bryan Ferry, Ian McCulloch, Jeff Bridges, Paul Weller, Paul Draper, Will Sergeant, Glenn Tilbrook, Sharleen Spiteri, the late fantastic Beatles expert Ian MacDonald, Chris Roberts, and lots more. I saw that many songs that I love don't appear on the list, so I got the idea for this video.
The titles in capital letters are the ones that are both on their list and on mine.

47. WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS
48. Within You, Without You
49. YESTERDAY
50. YOU'VE GOT TO HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY
* Does this mean that I think "Martha, My Dear" a better song than, say, "Revolution"? Not at all. It's just that some songs never appealed to me, and of some others I grew tired. But hey, they chose "Flying" and "Blue Jay Way" over "Things We Said Today," so maybe we fans can be idiosyncratic too!
* I know that I am probably forgetting some precious jewels. I also love some of their cover versions: Twist And Shout, Words Of Love, Soldier Of Love, Bad Boy, Roll Over Beethoven, Rock And Roll Music and Please, Mr. Postman.
* I'd like to say here that I love the speaking voices of the four Beatles, especially John's. His laughter in Anthology is really affecting. And ace critic Ian MacDonald wrote that John gave it all in every single take. That's not very cynical!!
Thanks for watching. Goodbye.
Music: "I Saw Her Standing There (Edit Takes 9 and 12)" + "I Call Your Name (Stereo)." |
