~ Michael Jackson - Beat It (Live)
Views: 84064 | | | | | "Beat It" is a hit single from Michael Jackson's album Thriller, released in 1983 (see 1983 in music). It was the third single from the album, following "The Girl Is Mine" (a duet with Paul McCartney) and "Billie Jean". "Beat It" won Jackson two Grammy Aw ...More ards for Record of the Year and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. It was also nominated for Song of the Year along with Jackson's "Billie Jean". Rolling Stone ranked it #337 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. "Beat It" is also notable for its guitar solo, a guest performance by Eddie Van Halen. In a reader's poll made by Guitar World magazine the solo was voted as the 67th greatest guitar solo of all time out of the 100. The lyrics are about life on the streets and gang fighting and killings. In 2008, the song was re-recorded by Jackson and R&B artist Fergie for Thriller 25, a special edition of the original album, commemorating the 25th anniversary of its release. Pop punk band Fall Out Boy also released a cover of the song which featured John Mayer playing the guitar solo. In the years directly preceding "Beat It", Jackson had already composed several of his own hit songs. His Off the Wall album, released in 1979 (see 1979 in music) and produced by Quincy Jones, featured two of his compositions -- "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Working Day and Night" -- as well as a third co-written with Louis Johnson, "Get on the Floor". (Similarly, The Jacksons' 1978 album Destiny showcased his hit song "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" and 1980's Triumph had the even more prescient "This Place Hotel"). In many respects the Off the Wall album served as a measure of things to come. Jackson and Jones had laid a foundation for putting songs appealing to different segments of their audience together on one seamless record. Jackson's loyal fan base amongst his R&B audience had spread into mainstream for more than a decade, and his songs displayed an uncanny ability to appeal to a fairly wide-ranging group of listeners: those who liked ballads, or dance tunes, or disco, or slightly funkier grooves, or even lighter fare could all find something to appreciate on Off the Wall. With Thriller, Jackson and Jones would attempt at once to hone, embellish, and surpass this feat. One of their ambitions was to include a rock song on the new album. They took partial inspiration from another chart-topping rock song by The Knack. According to Jones, "I said at the time, 'I need a song like "My Sharona"... A black version of a strong rock and roll thing, with the power of everything else he [wrote].' And [Jackson] hit it right on the head." Kicking off with an instantly recognizable gong (from a Synclavier) which quickly segues into an equally distinctive rapid fire drumbeat and then the ongoing guitar riff, "Beat It" speaks of urgency from the outset and indeed plays out like the urban cousin of "My Sharona". The lyrics to "Beat It" are an immediate, frightful warning to avoid fighting and violence at all costs, especially when honor seems to be at stake ("It doesn't matter who's wrong or right") and Jackson sings them forcefully, near the top of his register. Providing a dramatic electric guitar solo during the bridge of the song is Eddie Van Halen from the rock group Van Halen. According to Jones, when he first contacted the guitarist about appearing on the song, Eddie Van Halen didn't believe he was who he said he was, or that the offer was authentic. Nevertheless, he went on to provide the defining element that set the song apart from other Jackson tunes to date. Eddie Van Halen, famously, did not request payment for his performance. Steve Lukather, who played lead guitar on the track, stated: "Quincy Jones and Michael took a skeleton version of "Beat It" up to Eddie Van Halen's place as they wanted him to solo over the verse section. However, he played over a section that had more chord changes. So to fit his solo to where it went in the song, they had to cut the tape which took a lot of time to synchronise together." "After they had managed this, Jeff Porcaro and me were called in to bind Eddie's solo and some haphazard percussion which was a major headache. Initially, we rocked it out as Eddie had played a good solo but Quincy thought it too tough. So I had to reduce the distorted guitar sound and this is what was released. It was a huge R&B/rock success for us all really and helped pave the way for the bands of today that fuse these styles." In 2001, during Jackson's 30th Anniversary Special, he and guitarist Slash performed "Beat It" on stage, accompanied by dancers portraying gangsters. He ended the performance by recreating the dance scene from the video.

Singer, songwriter. Born August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, as the seventh of nine children. Jackson and his brothers Jackie, Tito, Marlon, and Jermaine were assembled into a singing group when Michael was only five years old. Despite h ...More is extremely young age, he soon distinguished himself as a singer and dancer of prodigious ability. No mere child prodigy, Michael had a gift for vocal phrasing that was not only well beyond his years, but would have been astonishing in a performer of any age. After winning several talent contests, the Jackson 5, as the group was called, signed a recording contract with the trailblazing soul label Motown and proceeded to rule the charts in the late 1960s and early '70s with such hits as "I Want You Back," "Stop, the Love You Save," "ABC," and "Dancing Machine." By 1972, Michael had begun releasing solo albums, and he sang the hit title song to the movie Ben.
Michael and the group (with the exception of brother Jermaine) left Motown in 1975, signing with Epic Records, which also gave Michael a solo deal. Two years later, he starred in the film version of the hit musical The Wiz, which also featured singer Diana Ross and comic Richard Pryor. Quincy Jones, who produced the soundtrack album, became one of Michael's longtime friends and collaborators. The year 1979 saw the release of Jackson's extraordinarily successful album Off the Wall; this record included the hit singles "Rock With You" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and eventually sold some 10 million copies. The singer had matured into a dynamic adult entertainer, but he also began to make his mark as a songwriter, crafting durable pop that synthesized rock and disco.
Jackson's next album, Thriller, was a quantum leap for him both creatively and commercially. Produced by Jones, the recording spanned a number of pop genres—cannily enlisting rock guitar idol Eddie Van Halen to play a solo on "Beat It," for example, guaranteed access to listeners Jackson might not otherwise have reached—and fired a record-setting seven Top 10 singles up the charts, notably the title track, a duet with Paul McCartney titled "The Girl Is Mine," the insinuating "Billie Jean," and the raucous "Beat It." The state-of-the-art videos that accompanied these singles, meanwhile, coincided with the sudden dominance of Music Television (MTV); Jackson's distinctive "Moonwalk" and overall visual panache (combined with brilliant choreography and lavish special effects) won him an even vaster audience. Thriller went on to become the bestselling album of all time and garnered an unprecedented eight Grammy Awards; Jackson also snagged a Grammy for his participation in the E.T.: The Extraterrestrial soundtrack album.
Jackson was a crucial player in the all-star benefit project We Are the World, which sought to combat hunger in Africa. In addition to his epochal solo work, he continued working with his brothers as part of The Jacksons; their 1984 "Victory" tour was a landmark of the decade. |

~ michael jackson and akon wanna be startin something
Views: 21347 | | | | | "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" is a 1983 single released from Michael Jackson's multi-platinum selling 1982 album Thriller. It was the first track on the album, and the fourth song released as a single, following "The Girl Is Mine" (a duet with Paul McCart ...More ney), "Billie Jean", and "Beat It". The song has recently been re-recorded by Jackson and R&B artist Akon for the Thriller - 25th Anniversary Edition album called Thriller 25.
With regard to the chant "Mama-se, mama-sa, ma-ma-kos-sa", writer Mark Anthony Neal says: "The lyrics were taken directly from the music of Cameroonian saxophonist Manu Dibango who broke into the American market in 1973 with his classic 'Soul Makossa'." The chant was then sampled in Barbadian singer Rihanna's hit dance single Don't Stop The Music. Two other samplings of the chant include an uncredited remix of Benni Benassi's "Satisfaction" and an untitled track credited to "Carmel Club" who used the chant to open a funky electro-house instrumental tune.
At six minutes and three seconds, "Wanna Be Startin Somethin'" is also the longest song on Thriller, ushering in the album in a buoyantly accessible way, and cannily showcasing the pop/funk sensibilities of Jackson and producer Jones.
"Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" continued the trend of hit singles for Jackson, eventually peaking at number five on the Pop and on the R&B charts, and gaining time on radio playlists across the country. The song was often not played at full length, however, due to industry format standards. The song was originally written in 1979 and intended for his Off the Wall album but was not recorded until the sessions for Thriller in 1982. |

~ Michael Jackson - Thriller (History World Tour 1996)
Views: 15910 | | | | | "Thriller" is an early 1984 hit single recorded by Michael Jackson for the Epic label. It reached #4 in the U.S. singles chart and #10 in the UK singles chart. On February 20, 2006, the single, as well as the video, was re-released as part of the Visionar ...More y: The Video Singles package. The 14-minute video clip is regarded by some as the greatest music video of all time and the song itself is considered one of Jackson's signature songs. Written by Rod Temperton, produced by Quincy Jones, and featuring a guest soliloquy from Vincent Price, "Thriller" is one of Jackson's signature songs, in no small part because of its music video. The original name for "Thriller" single was "Starlight Love." The single was included on Jackson's Thriller album, which was released on December 1, 1982 and was the final single pulled from it. A voice-over recording session of "Thriller" appears on the special edition version of the album, released in 2001. This session features additional verses of the rap performed by Vincent Price, which were removed from the final version of the song. This song is soon to be released on SingStar Pop Vol. 2.
Thriller (album):
Thriller is the sixth studio album by American pop singer Michael Jackson. It was released on November 30, 1982 by Epic Records, quickly becoming the best selling album of all time with sales between 45 and 108 million copies worldwide. Seven of the nine songs on the album went on to be top 10 singles. Thriller cemented Jackson as the predominant pop star of the late 20th century, enabling him to break down racial barriers by appearing on MTV and visiting the U.S. President at the White House. The album was the first to use music videos as successful promotional tools, with the videos for "Thriller", "Billie Jean" and "Beat It", all receiving regular rotation on MTV. The album itself also received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with All Music Guide giving it a perfect score. Thriller won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year as well as six others, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008. As a sign of the album's longevity, in 2003 Thriller was ranked number 20 on the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All time list and was listed by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers at number 3 of the Definitive 200 Albums of All Time. Thriller is preserved by the Library of Congress to the National Recording Registry as "culturally significant". In 2001, the album was reissued as Thriller: Special Edition, which contained additional audio interviews, a demo recording and the song "Someone In the Dark", featured on the Grammy-winning E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial storybook, a record that won Jackson a Grammy for "Best Album for Children".[2] In 2008, the album was reissued again as Thriller 25, which contained remixes featuring contemporary artists, a previously unreleased song and a DVD. Thriller was recorded between April and November 1982, at a production budget of $750,000, with several members of the band Toto.[3] It was the second Jackson album produced with Quincy Jones,[4] and the pair worked together on 300 songs for the album, of which nine were eventually used.[5] Jackson wrote four of Thriller's songs: "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", "The Girl Is Mine" (with Paul McCartney), "Beat It", and "Billie Jean".[6] Unlike many artists, Jackson did not write his songs on paper, instead dictating them into a sound recorder and when recording, singing from memory rather than written words off paper.[7] The relationship between Jackson and Quincy Jones became strained during recording, with Jackson spending much of his time rehearsing dance steps alone.[7] When the album's nine songs were completed, Jackson was unhappy with the result and remixed every song. When he was satisfied with a song he would call it "Smelly Jelly" and never cursed, instead he would call something "smelly". Jones believed that "Billie Jean" was not strong enough to be included on the record, but Jackson disagreed and kept it. Jones told Jackson that Thriller was unlikely to sell successfully like his previous solo album, Off the Wall, because the market had since weakened. In response, Jackson threatened to cancel the album's release. Jackson himself rarely commented on the work's recording, only giving a few interviews a decade. However he said that he was inspired to create an album where "every song was a killer" and focused the basis of Thriller as to ask "Why can't every one be like a hit song?".[9] Jones and Rod Temperton, however, gave detailed accounts of what occurred for the 2001 reissue of the album. Jones discussed "Billie Jean" and why it was so personal to Jackson, who struggled to deal with a number of obsessed fans. Jones wanted the long introduction on the song to be shortened, however Jackson insisted it remain because it made him want to dance. |
