"For No One" is a song written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon/McCartney) that originally appeared on T ...More he Beatles' seventh album, Revolver. A ballad about the end of a relationship, it was one of McCartney's most mature and poignant works to date. Musically the track is particularly distinguished by its French horn solo.
John Lennon said of the song, "One of my favourites of his—a nice piece of work."
Writing and recording
McCartney recalls writing "For No One" in the bathroom of a ski resort in the Swiss Alps. He said, "I suspect it was about another argument." The song's working title was "Why Did It Die".
The song was recorded on May 9, 16 and 19, 1966. McCartney sang, played clavichord (rented from George Martin's AIR company), piano, and bass, while Ringo Starr played drums and tambourine. Lennon and George Harrison did not contribute to the recording.
The French-horn solo was by Alan Civil, a British horn player. Prior to the session, Civil thought he was playing for a classical album, mistaking the words "For No One" on a lead sheet as "For No. One", an abbreviation for "Symphony Number One". During the session, McCartney pushed Civil to play a note that was beyond the usual range of the instrument (pitched on an F horn, it is a Super-D sharp, that is, an octave above the standard 'high D#'). The result was the "performance of his life," high praise for someone who was known as the best French horn player in London at the time.
Paul McCartney also released a different version on the soundtrack for his 1984 movie Give My Regards to Broad Street
Lyrics:
Your day breaks, your mind aches
You find that all the words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you
She wakes up, she makes up
She takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry
She no longer needs you
And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!
You want her, you need her
And yet you don't believe her when she said her love is dead
You think she needs you
And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!
You stay home, she goes out
She says that long ago she knew someone but now he's gone
She doesn't need him
Your day breaks, your mind aches
There will be time when all the things she said will fil your head
You won't forget her
And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years! |

~ The Beatles - Taxman

Copyright - 1966 EMI Records Ltd.
"Taxman" is the title of a song by The Beatles, opening the Revolver album, based on a common personification of tax collection agencies such as the HM Customs and Excise, the Inland Revenue or ...More the Internal Revenue Service. The song's writer, George Harrison, performs the role of a taxman on the song in a tongue-in-cheek manner.
Taxation leads to inspiration
Harrison was inspired to write "Taxman" when he discovered how much he was earning after accounting for taxes. As Harrison said, "'Taxman' was when I first realised that even though we had started earning money, we were actually giving most of it away in taxes. It was and still is typical." The reason for this was that due to how much The Beatles were earning, they were in the top tax bracket in the United Kingdom. In a 1984 interview with Playboy magazine, fellow Beatle Paul McCartney agreed with Harrison's depiction of the cir#@!&stances surrounding the writing of "Taxman": "George wrote that and I played guitar on it. He wrote it in anger at finding out what the taxman did. He had never known before then what he'll do with your money."
Harrison got some assistance in the lyrics from fellow Beatle John Lennon, who wrote a few one-liners on the song for him. In 1980, Lennon recalled in an interview with Playboy magazine, "I remember the day he [Harrison] called to ask for help on 'Taxman', one of his first songs. I threw in a few one-liners to help the song along because that's what he asked for. He came to me because he couldn't go to Paul [McCartney]. Paul wouldn't have helped him at that period. I didn't want to do it. I just sort of bit my tongue and said OK. It had been John and Paul for so long, he'd been left out because he hadn't been a songwriter up until then."
One quirk in the lyrics was Lennon's throwing in the names of the then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Harold Wilson and Edward Heath (a future Prime Minister). Harrison pulled no punches in his bipartisan bashing — Wilson and Heath were the leaders of the British Labour Party and British Conservative Party respectively. Although, in Take 11 on Anthology 2, Wilson and Heath are replaced by two triplets of "Anybody got a bit of money?" The garage rock group The Music Machine's cover version of Taxman replaced Wilson and Heath with President Lyndon Johnson and then-U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk respectively.
In 1987, Harrison stated that he had been pleased McCartney agreed to play the guitar on "Taxman". In reference to McCartney's guitar solo, Harrison said, "I was pleased to have Paul play that bit on 'Taxman'. If you notice, he did like a little Indian bit on it for me."
The release, and after
The song was eventually released on Revolver; although Lennon and McCartney had always been the more prolific songwriters, they made allowance for a few Harrison songs on each album The Beatles released, in much the same way they would attempt to ensure at least one album track always featured drummer Ringo Starr's singing. Because it was the first track, a fake count-in was added at the beginning. A heavily distorted voice counts along with George Harrison; if one listens closely, McCartney can be heard shouting the actual count-in underneath the distorted one (In the stereo version, McCartney's count-in is in the left speaker). There are minor differences in the stereo and mono versions, particularly the entry points for the cowbell and tambourine.
Recorded Abbey Road Studios
20--21 April 1966
Lyrics:
Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
'cause I'm the taxman,
yeah, I'm the taxman
Should five percent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
'cause I'm the taxman,
yeah, I'm the taxman
If you drive a car, I'll tax the street
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold, I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet
Taxman
'Cause I'm the taxman,
Yeah, I'm the taxman
Don't ask me what I want it for (ha ha Mr. Wilson)
If you don't want to pay some more (ha ha Mr. Heath)
'cause I'm the taxman,
yeah, I'm the taxman
Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
'cause I'm the taxman,
yeah, I'm the taxman
And you're working for no one but me |

~ The Beatles - What You're Doing
Views: 35663 | | | | | The Beatles - What You're Doing
High Qiality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2yJxiYbYe4&feature=email&fmt=18

"What You're Doing" is a song credited to Lennon/McCartney by Paul McCartney, one of eight originals o ...More f fourteen songs on the 1964 album Beatles for Sale by the group; it also appeared on the 1965 American release Beatles VI. It was recorded on September 29, September 30, and October 26, 1964.
Music
The song begins, uncommonly for the band, with a drum intro. It is followed by a guitar sequence used throughout the song as an ostinato figure after each verse (providing the song with a sense of unity). The atmosphere of the song is heavily syncopated, lending it a loose, jazzy feel. The influence of Buddy Holly can be felt in the song as well.
The song lacks a chorus, so the verses become the melodic focus of the song. In the first half of the verse, the ostinato figure continues to play and the first word of each line is punctuated by exclamatory background vocals. The second half of each verse is harmonized with "oohs," and the ostinato figure begins before the last line finishes. The overlapping of the ostinato figure contributes to the slightly disordered feel of the song. Each verse ends with a repetition of the title phrase:
Look, what you're doing
I'm feeling blue and lonely
Would it be too much to ask of you
What you're doing to me
The overall effect is tense—a tightly arranged song performed very loosely—suiting the lyrical matter of confronting a lover over a crumbling relationship.
There is also a bridge that occurs twice to provide a reprieve from the more anxious verses and an instrumental breakdown with a double-tracked guitar solo and a tumbling piano keeping rhythm underneath.
Lyrics
The lyrics are generally believed to concern Paul McCartney's relationship with Jane Asher. Between McCartney and Lennon, Paul had typically been the more optimistic of the two when it came to songwriting. However, with this song he's expressing feelings of loneliness and doubt in his relationship, a theme he would be forced to develop more over time as his relationship soured, with songs like I'm Looking Through You and You Won't See Me from Rubber Soul, and For No One from Revolver.
Throughout the song, Paul adds an interesting touch to the rhyme scheme by combining a single, two-syllable word with two one-syllable words (i.e. "Look what you're doing, I'm feeling blue and lonely...You got me runnin', and there's no fun in it..."), a technique he also used on She's A Woman which was also recorded during the Beatles For Sale sessions.
Other versions
This song is sampled as part of a medley of "Drive My Car" / "The Word" / "What You're Doing" on the remix album Love (released in November 2006; see 2006 in music). "What You're Doing" shares a number of characteristics with (the also predominantly McCartney-written) "Drive My Car", particularly the home key (D major), meter (4/4), and chord progression (alternating between B minor and G major).
Recorded Abbey Road September 29, September 30, and October 26, 1964
Lyrics:
Look, what you're doing
I'm feeling blue and lonely
Would it be too much to ask of you
what you're doing to me
You got me running
and there's no fun in it
Why should it be too much to ask of you
what you're doing to me
I've been waiting here for you
wondering what you're gonna do
should you need a love that's true
it's me
Please stop your lying
you got me crying, girl
Why should it be too much to ask of you
what you're doing to me
I've been waiting here for you
wondering what you're gonna do
should you need a love that's true
it's me
Please stop your lying
you got me crying, girl
Why should it be too much to ask of you
