Check out these Miles Davis Recordings:

Kind of Blue

This is the one jazz record owned by people who don't listen to jazz, and with good reason. The band itself is extraordinary (proof of Miles Davis's masterful casting skills, if not of God's existence), listing John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on saxophones, Bill Evans (or, on "Freddie Freeloader," Wynton Kelly) on piano, and the crack rhythm unit of Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Coltrane's astringency on tenor is counterpoised to Adderley's funky self on alto, with Davis moderating between them as Bill Evans conjures up a still lake of sound on which they walk. Meanwhile, the rhythm partnership of Cobb and Chambers is prepared to click off time until eternity. It was the key recording of what became modal jazz, a music free of the fixed harmonies and forms of pop songs. In Davis's men's hands it was a weightless music, but one that refused to fade into the background. In retrospect every note seems perfect, and each piece moves inexorably towards its destiny. --John Szwed

2008-10-07 -- 5/5:: A Game Changer
This album was part of Miles' "Second Coming." Cut with only "one take" and no practice sessions. They just walked into the recording studio and "did it." What they created "on the spot was not only fresh, but also "leading edge" for a very fertile period in Jazz. And it still remains virtually unsurpassed as improvised creative arts go. As Miles said in his autobiography, "I play what I know, and then I go above it."

That is what is done here: The whole group "goes above what they know" individually and collectively; and what they create here becomes a seminal event in the cohesion of the Jazz idiom itself; one that has left an indelible imprint on Jazz history.

All of the hard work that this group had engaged in up until this album (which was considerable) was but prologue for "Kind of Blue," which was a serious "game changer" even for Miles -- who was never happy with his work unless he was" changing the game."

Not only is this exquisitely beautiful music, that is mature, and deep in its creative vision, but music that also expands the previous structures of Jazz.

Although Miles presaged his turn to modal music in both "Milestone" and "My Prince Will Come," no one could have anticipated what a surprise this album would be: as in one fell swoop, it stripped away both a dependence on strict chord structures and on a strict time, tempo or beat.

The music's cohesion is centered on, and relied solely on the mature synergy and chemistry that had developed among the players. Throughout his career as band leader it was well known that Miles asked for everything that his sidemen had: He "milked" them for every morsel of creative substance and would accept nothing less.

On this album, he got it all. Amen and

100 Stars

2008-10-06 -- 5/5:: Utterly Sublime
Some Kind of Blue is the ultimate example of jazz as defining mood. The music is utterly sublime and the album historical with performances by Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Jimmy Cobb, John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, Wynton Kelly and, of course, Miles Davis. These names resonate with jazz aficionados, which along with its accessibility, is precisely the reason why this album is a perfect introduction to anyone interested in jazz and essential to one's collection.

2008-09-15 -- 5/5:: The End of an Era
With a line-up including Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers, James Cobb, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, and of course, the magnificent John Coltrane (all of this besides the one and only Miles Davis), how could this album be anything but incredible? With all of that remarkable and diverse talent, it's a wonder this record isn't a bit more ostentatious, or at least a little self indulgent. However, listening to Kind of Blue, one gets the distinct impression that the musicians involved in this recording felt were less concerned with wild solo work than with creating a pleasant atmosphere for the listener. They seem to be at ease with one another, and the record flows marvelously well. The pacing is cool and calm and lures you into a state of relaxation unlike few albums I've ever encountered. This edition of the classic release adds a bonus alternate version of "Flamenco Sketches" which to my ears may even better the original. This is a very logical place for the uninitiated jazz listener to start, as it is a staple of every jazz collection and one of the most accessible jazz works ever recorded.

2008-08-21 -- 5/5:: The all time jazz classic with great remastered sound!!!
I'll keep this short and sweet,this is an all time jazz classic,hands down!!! This awesome reissue features incredible remastered sound,a treat to listen to!!! A must for any serious music collection!!! Recommended!!! Timeless!!! A+

2008-08-01 -- 5/5:: My raving review is almost non-essential!
I'm not the master of jazz, nor the expert in jazz listening. But this is one of the most recordings in any music library. The all-star lineup on this recording is unbeatable, and the beautiful sound quality makes it a pleasure to listen to.

For the bridging of avant-gard jazz, free jazz, and traditional blues, this masterpiece provides a wealth of historical and stylistic information and musical inspiration.

What else can I say? Get it!

ymabrydavis Betty Davis is the Grande Domme of Funk. She inspired husband Miles into reinventing Jazz and himself in '69. She combined the sounds of her friends Sly and Jimi to make intense FunkRock albums of her own. Her fierce sexual persona and aggro voice scared the record industry in the mid-70's. In doing so, she paved the way for such rebels as the Slits, Grace Jones, Nina Hagen, Madonna, Annie Lennox, Diamanda Galas, Boss Hogg, Joi (Gilliam), Nikka Costa, and Peaches. This is the title track from her 1975 masterpiece. Obviously Prince heard it, which inspired him to turn it into "Nasty Girl" by Vanity 6 in 1982. age of nine and saxophone by twelve. His interest in jazz was sparked by seeing John Coltrane perform live in New York City clubs such as Birdland, the Village Vanguard and the Half Note. Throughout high school and college, Liebman pursued his jazz interest by studying with Joe Allard, Lennie Tristano and Charles Lloyd. Upon graduation from New York University (with a degree in American History), he began to seriously devote himself to the full time pursuit of being a jazz artist. In the early 1970s, Liebman took the leading role (as President) in organizing several dozen musicians into a cooperative, Free Life Communication which became an integral part of the fertile New York "loft" jazz scene in the early 1970s and was funded by The New York State Council of the Arts and the Space for Innovative Development. After one year spent with Ten Wheel Drive, one of the early jazz fusion groups, Liebman secured the saxophone/flute position with the group of John Coltrane's drummer, Elvin Jones. Within two years, Liebman reached the zenith of his apprenticeship period when Miles Davis hired him. These years, 1970-74, were filled with tours, recordings and the incredible experience gained by being on the band stand with two masters of jazz. At the same time, Liebman began exploring his own music-first in the Open Sky Trio with Bob Moses and then with pianist Richie Beirach in the group Lookout Farm. This group recorded for the German based ECM label as well as A&M Records while touring the U.S., Canada, India, Japan and Europe. Lookout Farm was awarded the number one position in the category "Group Deserving of Wider Recognition"in the 1976 Downbeat Magazine's International Critics' Poll. In 1977, Liebman did a world tour with pianist Chick Corea followed up the next year by the formation of the David Liebman Quintet with John Scofield, Kenny Kirkland and Terumasa Hino as featured sidemen. After several world tours and recordings by the quintet over three years, he reunited with Richard Beirach. They began performing and recording as a duo, as well as creating the group Quest in 1981. Beginning with bassist George Mraz and drummer Al Foster, the group solidified when Ron McClure and Billy Hart joined in 1984. Through 1991, Quest recorded seven CDs, toured extensively and did many workshops with students worldwide. Liebman's present group formed in 1991 includes guitarist Vic Juris, bassist Tony Marino and drummer Marko Marcinko. With these musicians he has pursued an eclectic direction in recording projects that has ranged from jazz standards to Puccini arias, original adaptations from the John Coltrane and Miles Davis repertoires, original compositions in styles ranging from world music to fusion, always maintaining a repertoire that balances the past, present and future. Over the past several decades, Liebman has often been featured with top European musicians such as Joachim Kuhn, Daniel Humair, Paolo Fresu, Jon Christensen, Bobo Stenson and in the World View Trio with Austrian drummer Wolfgang Reisenger and French bassist Jean-Paul Celea. His reputation in Europe has led to big band and radio orchestra performances, such as with the WDR in Koln, Germany, the Metropole Orchestra of the Netherlands and the new music Klang Forum in Vienna, Austria playing music specially commissioned to feature Liebman's unique soprano saxophone style. He has consistently placed among the top finalists in the Downbeat Critics' Poll since 1973 in the Soprano Saxophone category. As of the present, David Liebman has been featured on nearly 300 recordings, of which he has been the leader and/or co-leader on nearly 100. Well over 200 original compositions have been recorded. His artistic output has ranged from straight ahead classic jazz to chamber music; from fusion to avant garde.

In the 1950's, sparked by Rosa Parks, the Civil Rights movement challenged segregation. The resulting 60's Counterculture meant to free the mind, body, and spirit from any shackles. They embraced the tribal and the communal, the future and each other. The late 60's-early 70's was a golden age of connection and exploration opening the possibilities that created the best in the world we now live in. This is a story of our shared jouney we shouldn't forget. Here are many Soul Sisters who paved our path: LT. UHURA opened the future on "Star Trek"; the tribal Rock musical HAIR personified the re-evolution, which also gave us Melba Moore, Donna Summer, Leata Galloway, Marsha Hunt, Ben Vereen, Phillip Michael Thomas, and many more; all-inclusive music groups like BOOKER T & THE MG's, SLY & THE FAMILY STONE, ROTARY CONNECTION, JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE, The Loading Zone, Santana, and The Chambers Brothers; new world couples like Jimi Hendrix and Devon Wilson, Brian Jones and Donyale Luna; activist singers like NINA SIMONE; Native American and African clothes and hairstyles were reborn; this opened the door for MIRIAM MAKEBA and other World Musics into the mainstream; MARSHA "Brown Sugar" HUNT set the template for Betty Davis and the next decade of Funk Rock women; MILES and BETTY DAVIS stirred Funk and Psychedelia into the Fusion Jazz of "#@!&es Brew"; by '69, the Fashion industry was opened by JOLIE JONES, NAOMI SIMS, DONYALE LUNA, Carole La Brie, Beverly Johnson, Jane Kennedy, and African ELIZABETH OF TORO; as Feminism dawned in the early 70's, ELAINE BROWN took command of the generally sexist Black Panther Party while ANGELA DAVIS fought The Man; modern poet/authors like NIKI GIOVANNI, Toni Morrison, and Alice Walker inspired waves of new students; the new archetype of 'Soul Sister', with brains, class, style, and attitude, took its first proud strut; this modern amazon ruled the screens with actors like PAM GRIER, TAMARA DOBSON, CAROL SPEED (cutest eyes ever!), THERESA GRAVES, Vonetta McGhee, Jeane Belle, and Gloria Hendry; and in the comics with Wonder Woman's sister, NUBIA, and feiry STORM of the X-MEN. About ROTARY CONNECTION: The Chess label parlayed modern blues (Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf) and Rock'n'roll (Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley) in the 50's. Young heir Marshall Chess stirred them into the psychedelic 60's with the RC. It also introduced Minnie Ripperton, who went on to glory with "Loving You" later. Though Minnie has sadly passed, her daughter Maya Rudolph is a shining star on "Saturday Night Live". Last night was the music industry's big night in Hollywood. The 50th Annual Grammy Awards produced few surprises. Let's listen in for more. Legendary crooner Tony Bennett and Natalie Cole handed the "Best Record of the Year" award to Amy Winehouse for

"Back to Black." "Best Song of the Year" winner was also Winehouse for the chart-topping tune "Rehab." And to top it off Winehouse also walked away with "Best New Artist" of the year. It was an emotional night for her to say the least. [Amy Winehouse, 'Best New Artist']: "To Ray Ray and Joe, ten years this year, Ray Ray and Joe. To Mark Ronson and Salon Remy. To my mum and dad. For my Blake, my Blake incarcerated. And for London, this is for London, cause Camden Town is burning down." The "Best Album of the Year" award went to Herbie Han#@!& for "River: The Joni Letters." It also won "Best Contemporary Jazz Album." Han#@!& praised his musical idols for their inspiration. [Herbie Han#@!&, 'Best Album of the Year']: "And I'd like to thank the academy for courageously breaking the mould this time. (Applause.) And in doing so, honor the giants upon whose shoulders I stand. Some of whom Miles Davis and John Coltrane." Alicia Keys was the winner of the "Best Female R&B Performer" award. She now has nearly a dozen Grammys to her name. [Alicia Keys, 'Best Female R&B Performer']: "I have to thank you so much, first to God, because God has brought me through such a tremendous journey. I want to, I want to thank you for that. I have to thank my angels that surround me all the time in heaven, especially my grandmother, who's with me every day. I have to thank all of the people that love me and support me in every way." American Idol alumni Carrie Underwood performed her hit single, "Before He Cheats." That earned her "Best Country Song of the Year" and "Best Female Country Vocal Performance" Grammys this year. Kanye West won four Grammys, putting him in second place behind Amy Winehouse. He led all Grammy contenders with eight nominations going into the Grammys this year. Producer George Martin and his son Giles won "Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media" for The Beatles tribute album "Love." It features music compiled and remixed for the Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas of the same name. [Ringo Starr, Music Legend]: "My name is Ringo. A long time ago, we made these records with my good friends John, Paul and George. And, uh, George Martin was involved then. And now George Martin and his son Giles are involved again, and they did a great job on this music. And with Cirque du Soleil it turned into a beautiful dream." Earlier, Hollywood actor Tom Hanks introduced a tribute to The Beatles, describing their music as a revolution which "changed the history of our planet." Congrats to all the winners and nominees.
