2008-10-05 -- 3/5:: Getting the 3 CD's makes up for this box set
I wrote a review for the set that just contains the 2 DVD's. So I won't go into how bad the video quality is. Having said that, having the 3 cd's is worthwhile as the band does a great job here, but the DVD production ruins it!
2008-10-05 -- 5/5:: Incredible set! Should have bought two so I could gift one set!
I pre-ordered this limited edition set mid last September and it showed up today for only $36.99! What a bargain for such a limited press! My hats off to Amazon again! You guys rock! This CD/DVD rocks!!! Thanks again!
2008-10-04 -- 2/5:: This set is certainly no Score !
I purchased the collector's edition thinking that Dream Theater has always been a fan friendly band and would be creating a product similar in quality to their previous release, SCORE. Well, either they've changed their minds or are now content to let Roadrunner Records determine the direction of their career. If that's the case then their careers are definitely heading for a downward spiral.
The audio lacks the crispness and clarity of Budukan and Score and the video is somewhat sub par. Plus having the "concert" from various locales lacked the spontaneity of a show shot all in one venue, The band plays well but growing beards and getting a gut (James, buddy, you've got to start working out) does not a band make.
Truthfully this is a set for completists only. Buyer beware !
2008-10-04 -- 5/5:: just received!
I just watched the first 10 minutes from the beginning and then skipped around a bit. While the video is not as crisp and smooth as Budokan, the cameras actually do a decent job of adding to the flavor of the performance. I won't spoil to much here but make sure you check out Dark Eternal Night. The break down solo in the middle is f#*king INCREDIBLE. I think John Petrucci's nightmare of "playing so fast it turns into one note" has finally come true!! And OMG!, Petrucci looks like Jesus Christ on steroids!! From what I have seen of the DVD, it is worth the clams even if you cannot get the deluxe version which I did receive today (October 4th) with a few problems. Amazon always sends a confirmation email when they ship an item. However this one time they did not. So after reading the first review here I started to become concerned. I contacted Amazon and they assured me that it had shipped on September 30th. And I did receive it today, in a cheap padded envelope. WTF ever happened to Amazon using sturdy boxes? I then noticed that I was charged for shipping cost when I always choose Free Super Saver whatever. So I then spent 20 minutes on the phone getting a refund for shipping. I'm not complaining only making a point that Amazon seems to be getting a little sketchy. Also, I ordered my copy on September 5 so I'm not sure why I would receive one when the other guy ordered his in August and did not get one. Anyway, I'll save the review on the audio quality of the concert for another time but the performance is Dream Theater worthy! ;)
2008-10-04 -- 5/5:: Happy to be one of 5000
I am going to leave this review without even recieving this yet. I read how everyone is upset with Amazon for delivery time. This is what happens when you order online at times. If it is correct and there is only 5000 printed of this special edition, anyone who got to be a lucky one in getting a copy should be happy they are one of the 5000. Mine is being shipped right now and it is projected to be here about 5 days later then expected. I have been a fan of the group since I seen them in a small bar on the Images and Words Tour in 1992 in Ft Wayne, Ind. and knowing how great of stuff these guys put out, I will wait a little longer to get it and be happy because I at least got a copy. Any true fan would say the same.
