misterfuzzykins Mike Portnoy is my idol...however, I like him better not soloing. Not saying that his solo isn't ultterly amazing, which it is, I like his stuff more when he is playing weird riffs and stuff in conjunction with the rest of Dream Theater. I just think it sounds cooler.

madad123 I have to say I disagree with you. true,in solos you can hear everything the drums are doing,but thats just technique. When a drummer is playing in a band you can see how they adapt to different musical situations and use their technique for the purpose of the song.This shows a better drummer more than solos. Most people with a metronome and a lot of time on their hands will be able to do a flashy solo. Its how you use the technique to fulfil the songs requirements that makes you a good drummer.

Kimmin you are right about how a solo shows off all of your technical skill and whatever, but if you can solo better than anyone else but you cant play with a group... then your a lousy drummer. the main focus should be playing with others. DarkEternalRockstar its good to see mike play a small kit, he just owns it everytime. the dream theater song "Lie" on his constant motion dvd is just amazing when he plays it on his bonham kit

kimmin1208 haha "solo isn't how you should judge the drummer" maybe i need to get a load of you and your poor musical knowledge. songs have limitations. you cannot hear every single bit of the drums such as ghost notes with songs. solo is when drummers really have their wings wide open and show their so called "true technics" or what they're really capable of. just like guitar solos. in songs you have the limitation of beats and chord progressions.

mackfmocattack look Kimmin I never said his solo was "useless". He is an excellent player, but his solos aren't his strength. Drums are almost always a backing instrument so if he plays with others better than he solos that's fine. Most people who aren't drummers don't go to shows to listen to a really good drum solo. I mean I play drums and i don't know where I would be if i didn't, but the solo isn't how you should judge the drummer.
