2008-07-17 -- 5/5:: what can you say...
...that hasn't been said before about this album. it just delivers all around. this is by far my favorite band and a very VERY close 2nd favorite album next to scenes from a memory. undoubtedly this album, as all DT albums do, delivers musically. sure, there are new bands out there that make crazier music with faster, more random stops and heavier, more chaotic music (i know this because i have friends who shove bands like between the buried and me, dillinger escape plan, and the number 12 looks like you down my throat.) HOWEVER, in my opinion, as much as i appreciate bands like that, my friends that shove these bands down my throat don't take time to appreciate music like dream theater mostly due to their short attention spans and lack of patience. dream theater is a very technical band, and though they even can tend to over-do it at times, for the most part they have a large amount of restraint that those bands i mentioned earlier lack. with that being said, on to the album.

this album creates a feeling inside me that i cannot totally describe, except that it is a really positive emotional feeling. dream theater is plenty technical too, but they accomplish this feat in a less "in your face" method than the bands i mentioned earlier, and they also don't just decide to be technical for the sake of doing it for bragging rights. they do this because it sounds amazing! the fact that human beings can write such powerful music that is equally based on feeling as it is technicality absolutely blows my mind! bands like dillinger and buried simply cannot capture the EPIC feelings that these guys do. they write their songs with insight on what they're trying to do and the feeling they try to convey with a great deal of passion and professionalism. they go off on tangents sometimes, usually i would hate this, but DT's are done to perfection, fitting in every nook and cranny to the slightest detail, most of which the average listeners out there wouldn't even notice. with superb musicianship combined with the emotional and extremely talented vocals of james labrie (yes, i actually like him, why most people don't i neglect to understand,) this album is just about as good as it gets. instead of going on a long list of details that describes how good these musicians actually are, let me sum it up in this one statement: at times, the music is so good (whether it be due to technicality or the majestic feelings) that you can easily achieve a level of disbelief that these guys are even human.

this music is just awesome, epic, well thought out, technical, well intentioned, and it's not going to give u a headache like the rumbling chaotic "progressive" death metal music that is out there today will. this band does it with class! buy "alaska" by between the buried and me, then buy "images and words" and see the difference. the sound on this album is crisp and clean and there is nothing that they want you to hear that is not heard. my only complaint is that i do not quite enjoy the way the snare sounds on this album, too mechanical. other than that, it delivers in every single aspect of music possible.

p.s. portnoy did eventually, thank god, establish a better snare sound.

2008-07-14 -- 5/5:: Really Great Album by a Really Great Band
I picked this album up on an impulse and I must say, it was a good buy. This was Dream Theater's second studio album and contains their only big radio hit, "Pull Me Under". The whole album is an awesome display of musicianship and is a real treat to listen to. If you are a fan of the band, or liked "Pull Me Under", it is certainly worth the buy.

2008-07-01 -- 5/5:: Truly amazing talent and truly amazingly enjoyable
They are the real deal. The guitar work in the second half of Under a Glass Moon is terrific. There is a lot of great material here, and I'm looking forward to listening to it many times before I truly form an opinion. So far, it is certainly a 5 star album.

2008-06-11 -- 1/5:: Of COURSE they're amazingly talented...
...and can play the pants off almost any other band out there. That much is pretty obvious, no matter what you think of the songs.

But, this sounds WAAAAAAAY too much like 1980's hair metal for my taste. And not the "kinda okay in a silly mood because it's at least kinda heavy and at least faux-evil" Motley Crue's "Shout at the Devil" or even the "bluesy, gritty, sleazy and dirty" G 'n' R's "Appetite" kind of hair metal way.... the really craptacular and loathsome Bon Jovi or Def Leppard kind of way...

Musicianship is GREAT (ten star worthy on the strength of that alone), but the horrific songs, the style and tone is reminiscent of some of the worst music ever, to me (which is worth about negative 20 stars).

To each their own, I guess.

2008-06-08 -- 5/5:: Still powerful and still very inspired
In my collection of 400+ CD's comprising various forms of metal, goth, shoegazer, swing, choral, opera, broadway, and others, this still stands as one of my five favorites. It's inspired, creative, and novel.

While the time since its release have led to newer sounding keyboard technology, the keyboards sounds here are still very passable, nothing like changes since the old 70's era Yes or Emerson, Lake, and Palmer keyboard sounds.

Of several progressive metal and progressive rock selections I played this for an opera fan last week and he found this the most inspired, creative, and pleasing. With respect to what is current in the metal scene, it feels that way to me too.

11-22-1997, Irving Plaza, New York. Very emotional performance.. James explains why. One of my personal favorites. - I was sitting on the edge of his bed Staring at the headlines on the paper He said, 'Look at poor Gene Kelly I guess he won't

You can take away my heroes Can you take away my pain Take away my pain Leave the cold outside Please don't let it rain Don't stumble on my pride Take away my pain I'm not frightened anymore Just stay with me tonight I'm tired of this fight Soon I'll be knocking at your door She was standing by the edge of his bed Staring at the message on their faces He said, 'What else can you do, babe? I guess I won't be coming home again.' They just took away all my promises Make them take away my pain Take away my pain Leave the cold outside Please don't let it rain Don't stumble on my pride Take away my pain I'm not frightened anymore Just stay with me tonight I'm tired of this fight Soon I'll be knocking at your door His final scene The actor bows And all those years Are gone somehow The crowd applauds The curtain falls I was standing by the edge of the water I noticed my reflection in the waves Then I saw you looking back at me And I knew that for a moment You were calling out my name You took away my hero Will you take away my pain Take away my pain Let the cold inside It's time to let it rain There's nothing left to hide Take away my pain I'm not frightened anymore I'm learning to survive Without you in my life Till you come knocking at my door

Metallica - Battery Master of Puppets (1984--1986) Elektra Records A&R director Michael Alago, and co-founder of Q-Prime Management Cliff Burnstein, attended a September 1984 Metallica concert. Impressed with what they saw, they signed Metallica to Elek

tra Records and made the band a client of Q-Prime Management.[15] Metallica's burgeoning success was such that the band's British label Music for Nations issued a limited edition Creeping Death EP, which sold 40,000 copies as an import in the U.S. Two of the three songs on the record (cover versions of Diamond Head's "Am I Evil?", and Blitzkrieg's "Blitzkrieg") appeared on the 1989 Elektra reissue of Kill 'Em All.[16] Metallica embarked on its first major European tour with Tank to an average crowd of 1,300. Returning to the U.S. marked a tour co-headlining with W.A.S.P. and Armored Saint supporting. Metallica played its largest show at the Monsters of Rock festival on August 17, 1985, with Bon Jovi and Ratt at Donington Park in England, playing in front of 70,000 people. A show in Oakland, California, at the Day on the Green festival saw the band play in front of a crowd of 60,000. Metallica's third studio album, Master of Puppets was recorded at Sweet Silence Studios and was released in March 1986. The album peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200, and spent 72 weeks on the chart.[17] The album was the band's first to be certified gold on November 4, 1986, and was certified six times platinum in 2003.[3] Some critics, including Steve Huey of All Music Guide, consider the album to be the "greatest heavy metal album of all time", and earned Metallica the title of the "pioneers of thrash metal".[18] Following the release of the album, Metallica supported Ozzy Osbourne for a U.S. tour.[15] Hetfield broke his wrist skateboarding down a hill and continued the tour performing vocals, with guitar technician John Marshall playing rhythm guitar Master of Puppets is the third album by American thrash metal band Metallica. The album was recorded in 1985[3] and released by Elektra Records on March 26, 1986 (see 1986 in music) in North America. The album reached number twenty-nine on the U.S. Billboard 200, and has to date sold over six million copies in U.S. alone. It was the last album the band recorded with bass player Cliff Burton and is considered a landmark in the history of heavy metal. Battery" is the opening track of Metallica's 1986 album Master of Puppets. As with the opening track from Ride the Lightning, Battery begins with a slow, clean guitar part. In this case, as many as four acoustic guitars are layered harmonically before the drums and bass come in with distorted guitars playing a more melodic version of the acoustic part. This lasts until 1:06, when the guitars cut into a very fast minimalist thrash metal riff that is the basis for the rest of the song. In live concerts, the beginning is not played by the band but instead the actual recording is used (recently dropped 1/2 step in key, since the band tunes 1/2 step down).In keeping with the general "control" theme of Master of Puppets, the lyrics of "Battery" discuss the control that anger can have over one's behavior. The title refers to "battery" in the sense of "assault and battery", as shown by these lyrics: "Smashing through the boundaries / Lunacy has found me / Cannot stop the battery". The song is an indirect tribute to the Old Waldorf Club in San Francisco on Battery street.Battery is still an almost constant part of the band's live set list, frequently as the opening or closing song. In some cases, it is also used as a song before the intermission. When played, the song may stop before the interlude, and James Hetfield asks the crowd "Are you alive?... How does it feel to be alive?" and followed by the solo played by Kirk Hammett. During the chorus of the original version, bassist Cliff Burton can be heard roaring the backing vocals each time Hetfield says the title. In the live version of the song played on the Live #@!&: Binge & Purge album, intros to the songs "No Remorse", "Ride the Lightning", and "So What?" are played in the song. When performed with the San Francisco Symphony in 1999, the intro up to the thrash riff was instead played by string players in the symphony, utilizing pizzicato in the beginning (the original acoustic) then with bows for the rest.The song "The Bitter End" from Sum 41 is very close to the song song was covered by Eric AK (Flotsam & Jetsam), Dave Lombardo, Mike Clark, and Robert Trujillo for Metallic Assault: A Tribute to Metallica. Dave Lombardo .This song (along with the entire Master of Puppets album) was covered by Dream Theater as part of their world tour in 2002 and has been released as an official Bootleg recording.This song was covered by the band Machine Head for Kerrang!'s Master of Puppets: Remastered, and is also included as a bonus track on some versions of their album The Blackening.

Dream Theater Death Magnetic:Is There Hope Left for Metallica?

There's an interesting article over at The Trukstop about Metallica and their forthcoming "ninth album." There's a lot of speculation, based on comments from the band members, that this release will be like "old Metallica" and deliver what fans are cravin

...More

g. But the question is: does it really matter? I, for one, say no. Metallica is over. They are what they are and will never be more, and that's okay. They've already changed the landscape. Many fans, the snobbiest ones, if you ask me, believe that Master of Puppets was the last great Metallica album. Frankly, I think they are full of crap. Puppets was the last album before Metallica caught on, and that makes it a "got there first" kind of thing. The next group of fans will tell you that ...And Justice For All was the last great Metallica album, and they may be right. Justice featured the same heavy, fast, double-bass-y angst that people connected with on Ride the Lightning and Kill 'Em All, only with better, more developed, more mature songs. Then came the album that changed it all, Metallica, aka The Black Album. A lot of fans will tell you that The Black Album sucked, that Metallica sold out, that this album is all about "feelings" - like it's something to be afraid of. But it's not. Actually, at the time, it was awesome. I remember standing in the boat house of Simsbury High Crew team and discussing how "James... like.... sings, or something" on one of the tracks (Nothing Else Matters). But let's be honest: Sad But True, Whereever I May Roam, The God That Failed, The Struggle Within... all awesome songs. The Black Album is great, the only thing is it's actually accessible. And the average Metallica fan doesn't like that. See, Metallica is about rebellion, chaos, defiance. It's about angst, non-conformity, darkness, and anger. It's about speed and power and head banging intimidation. And when your dad can listen to songs on a Metallica CD and enjoy them, it's not the same. So people lost faith. And Metallica cashed in. And their popularity grew. And they conquered the world on their diet of 10 songs every 4 years while real Metallica fans moved on. Some fans moved to rock equals Megadeth. Some got heavier with Death, Slayer, Carcass, and Cannibal Corpse. Some evolved into metal techno like Fear Factory. And some went to lighter fare like Rush and Dream Theater, and in my case, Phish. Let's not even get into the whole Napster thing. That is a large part of the reason so many people hate that loud-mouthed Lars. Metallica turned on its fans via Lars' crusade, and they have paid dearly in fan loyalty. There's a lot of text here, but the gist is this: I don't believe people will welcome back Metallica with open arms. Their music represents an era. The people who are most fitting fans for music like Metallica's back catalog probably aren't much interested in it anymore. And the ones who are don't know and/or don't care about them anymore because their new stuff is mostly irrelevant. I can barely name a song off St. Anger. Their contributions to music cannot be ignored, but their current status is more the MTV crowd than the teenage headbanger who is listening to Godsmack or System of a Down or any one of the 10,000 bands who are heavier, faster, younger, and more in touch than Metallica. So, yeah, I'll check out the ninth album. But buy it? Not likely.
